It would be merciful for people not to come calling and disturb the loneliness of the mountains, to which I have returned from the sorrows of the world. Muso Soseki
_Morning,

It was a nice day yesterday, but it looks like the weather has finally turned. The mountain is in a cloud. The high yesterday reached 44 degrees and the overnight low was 36 degrees. It was 43 degrees and drizzling lightly at 7am observation. The forecast is calling for rain up top all day. I wish it was 20 degrees colder so I could curl up with a book and watch the snow fall... soon enough, hopefully. Be sure to pack some rain gear if you'll be venturing out! Alum is already soggy with all the recent snowmelt, the rain today should make it positively sloppy.

I had a pleasant hike down Alum yesterday afternoon. The AM clouds were clearing a bit and I only saw about 10 people on the trail. Much thanks to all the kind folks who've brought me tea, stamps, jam, cheese and crackers over the past few days! It's the little things that mean a lot up here!

Top photo: I got bored and took some macro shots yesterday. Above: Plenty of clouds to keep me company.

Hey JP-just saw yesterday's picture with you and Mamaw B. My nephew Angelo(13) and I hiked up there Sunday and had run in to her just before the Bluffs on the way up. I had seen the article about her in the Knoxville News Sentinel, so was tickled to get to meet her. What a great inspirational story of courage and toughness! Then we met up with you JP and her on top as we left to hike back down. Let me know if you need anything or run out of triscuits and cheese. I plan to keep coming up thru out the winter, weather permitting of course. I just started hiking this year, and fell in love with it. The Alum Cave Trail is my favorite so far, and have done that one 8 times up and down in the same day. There is nothing like being on that Mountain! At 62 it has changed my life. My nephew loves it too, and what a blessing to me and him to be together doing this. Have a great day all!

I'm pretty sure he needs bourbon. Good bourbon. Maybe not Pappy good, but at least Basil Haydon good. And fresh fruit. Pack it in tupperware so you don't crush it on the way up. Maybe a little arugula.

I think Steve D meant up/down Alum in one day, 8 different times. 8 times in one day would be like John from Michigan the "speed hiker"

Looks like a huddle under the blanket kind of day up there already. Stay dry! :)

Ever since I learned about there being a winter caretaker for the lodge I've thought that it would be an interesting job to do if only once. But, JP, I'm a lot oldert than you and I would perhaps stay mostly around the lodge, wrapped up in a blanket, reading, and generally posting comments for the duration of the winter. Yet, on second thought, it would be wonderful to venture out each day, following a different route to somewhere on the mountain and back. Regardless, it is definitely a great job for a time ! Yes, Debi, a tattoo might not be the thing for you to do. I believe, though, that I'd like to have a small one, a black silhouette, of a hiker on my lower leg. Just a thought. You might get your snow, JP. G'day

Hope you get you snow, JP! I'm looking forward to some myself here in northeast Alabama! Looking forward to the pictures from atop Old Smoky!!

Revolution, fountains, dune buggies.............very odd combination of words to say the least; who said that ? These quotes get stranger all the time.
