Now or never. Thoreau
Morning y'all,

It's another beautiful, clear morning up top. The high yesterday reached 25 degrees. The low was 3 degrees. It was 16 degrees and clear at 7am observation. The mountain received no new snow yesterday. There is a total of about 3 inches on the ground. The road just opened up this morning, so there should be a bit more foot traffic on the trails. Be prepared for winter conditions, it's sure to be cold up top! The trails are calling, enjoy!

Here's a good read about dangers of hiking in the Smokys.

That was some story about that rescue; another account of people getting out in the Park, with very inadequate preparation and equipment; It just makes one wonder.

Hey Tony H, I kept expecting to see your name in that rescue story.

There is a lot of garbage going on with this site. i can detect some of the imposters by their inaccurate typographic style. For instance "Danny G" after my posts as Jenny B. Or impersonating Norman but not quite correctly. The only way to solve this problem is to require registration to participate in this forum. Someone thinks they are very smart, but they are actually very stupid, and need to realize they are stupid. I fully expect a stupid response to this.

Jenny B: It takes all kinds, I've always heard. There is a LeConte forum at the top of this page, and I haven't checked it thoroughly enough, but plan to do just that soon. I agree with you. Like some say, if some comments are ignored, they usually go away without the soapbox to stand on which is the only thing a few seek. That's just how our society is these days, but we don't have to like it. Yeah, I've been the object of a few slights myself. No big deal. I do enjoy your particular commentary. Even on my own site now I refrain from giving much of a reply to some of the remarks here. It's snowing here in central KY now, and despite my knee I'm going up into the woods behind my house and pretend I'm on the Trillium trail ! Remember: "No importa a donde vaya, eso es lo que hay" !
G'day my friend.

doug y -- just read your skunk story. We High on LeConte Blog commenters brag on JP's prose a lot. Well, I am here to brag on yours. Enjoyed the bear story as you already know and also today the skunk story, Maybe you should publish your stuff other than on your own web site. Also you mentioned having trouble getting a new router to work. Do you suppose there could be something wrong with the router rather than with your installation? It has been known to happen that some piece of new electronic equipment turned out to be defective right out of the box. Wouldn't hurt to check. Right? :-) Good luck.

Doug- I had to smile when I read your above post, because I do the same thing! Being from NKY & having acreage to roam, when I walk along the creek I imagine I'm on my way to LeConte as well. Having made numerous trips a year to the smokies for the past 28 years with my children & parents, it is like my second home and my dream to actually have that second home there one day. I took my 1st hike up Alum 20 years ago with my father and had the privilege to return with my 21 year old daughter this year. Hearing her talk about the magic of the mountains and all it's beauty, made me realize I did quite well raising 4 children alone & hearing her talk about the "simple things" in life. Dad can no longer get around like he used to, but we still make our pilgrimage many times a year to the area. JP - thank you for the daily pictures and posts, for I am still able to allow my parents a daily view into "life on LeConte"! Have a wonderful day !

Doug, you're a great guy and I support you, but you don't understand the irony vs. earnestness debate. OK, c'mon folks, let's have the next entry such as Ginny C. talking about hiking experiences. I know you're there and I won't let up.

Well we did not get to summit on Wednesday, got a late start on the trail. It was wonderful hiking in the new fallen snow up Rainbow though. We did have a ranger stop us on the road back down and ask if we had saw anyone "out of character". After we got back into town, we discovered they were looking for someone wanted in connection with a crime. I'm thinking he was somewhere between rainbow and sugerland because they had reported sightings of him at the visitors center. HAPPY TRAILS

JP, your pics and posts are an encouragement to so many; to those who may never make the ascent or the few who go up several times a year. Ive shared "JP" photo-journalism with many on various media.

Had planned to bring you green mountain blend last winter but all my trips occurred over summer. I presume your using a Keurig brew system? Thats the only way I've seen it around my place.

As many models that Keurig makes, I believe that they all operate on electric power! I'm spolied with mine and love all the varieties of their coffee. Reminds me of JP as well as a wonderful Vermont vacation I had last year

jean d : thank you for your compliments; JP is a better writer than me and our styles are different; if everyone was the same in this world it'd be a most boring place; (the router is fine)

Jenny B : "irony vs. earnestness debate" ? Quite the contrary, I believe that I understand it quite clearly; I want only to limit my comments to hiking, backpacking, and the lodge; Perhaps, as we all do, I miss something from time to time, but I'm always willing to listen to the opinions of others; maybe you can enlighten me further;

It looks very cold outside this morning; and "hard"; I can only imagine what the conditions are up on M. Leconte ! G'day

My apologies, Doug. You make a very significant contribution to this site. My thinking in my ill-thought-out comment was that you seem to be very earnest. For some people, such as the trolls who have bedeviled this site recently, earnestness in and of itself presents itself as a target. I hoped in my comment to help you see how that operates.
