"Free is the bird in the air, And the fish where the river flows; Free is the deer in the wood, And the gipsy wherever he goes. Hurrah! And the gipsy wherever he goes." There is a dash of the gipsy in every one of us who is worth his salt. Horace Kephart

Morning,

It was a clear, snowy day yesterday. The high was 33 degrees. For the majority of the morning, it sleeted and did not seem like it wanted to snow. Around noon, the temperature dropped and stayed low enough to keep snowing. The mountain received .49" of rain and 2 inches of snow. The low was 17 degrees. It looks like it'll be a beautiful, clear day up top.

Yesterday morning felt like one of those days where the mountain was trying to talk with me. I hiked down Rainbow Falls into the mist and didn't see another hiker until the Falls. It is an egocentric myth, but it felt like I was the only one on the mountain. Big spaces & solitude can do some mystical things to your head. I am so grateful to be able to enjoy this wilderness and feel like a homo sapien.

"Closely control children" signs are my favorite.

I was closely controlled as a child, but over time managed to outgrow my parents. I started this morning re-reading "That Book" (Kephart's). He was a product of his time, somewhat of a racist, but nobody ever got as much mountain into words as he did.

It's funny...when Michelle and I were sitting on Lido Beach near Sarasota, FL on Saturday watching the sunset with some cold Yuenglings in hand...one of the things we talked about was "I bet that JP is going to be getting some snow this weekend up at the lodge...lucky." If that doesn't say where our hearts lie I don't know what does!

Nice shots. Can't place ole Thomas J. rock but must have walked right by many times by now. Sorry D and I haven't gotten back up with more 'goodies' but we're on the road again and miss the day hikes terribly. Thanks for giving us a daily dose of what is waiting for us when we get back home.

It won't be long now before the summer gang will arrive and you'll no longer have the mountain to yourself. Enjoy it while you can!

Amen! Yesterday on the way down I passed two kids in plastic ponchos and sweat shirts heading up to the lodge. They were soaked. Their parents were soaked too........

I did not know that T J had a rock either. Like a previous post I probably walked by it many times.

On which trail is the 'Thomas Jefferson' rock?

JP

He's on Rainbow Falls. It's not an 'official' name, but if you hike down Rainbow and go all the way back up, maybe you'll see shapes in rocks too. But it definitely looks like a man's nose with a fancy wig. For some reason, TJ was the first that came to mind.

How many people did you have rustling around the shelter Saturday?

Really enjoy your posts and find them inspirational. I have hiked up Leconte three times on Alum Cave trail, but your posts and pics really make me want to try the other trails as well. I'm sure they are all lovely in their own way.

Looking forward to some more snow pic...love the snow and ice against the blue sky.

Well with people commenting on the TJ rock and with the song of the day I thought they meant Tommy James. Oh those 60's.

I concur with what you said about being alone on the mountain. As a volunteer in the Adopt a Trail program I am in the woods alone many times and not see a soul. How beautiful and tranquil it is. Thanks for your blogging and keeping us up to date on winter in the woods.

After that little boy was attacked at Rainbow Falls a few years ago, I can see why they put up signs regarding child control.

Wish Wal-mart had one of those signs about children......
