Morning,
It was a mild, rainy day yesterday. The high was 47. It rained consistently from about 10-noon, then on and off for the remainder of the day. There was .74" of rain. The low was 38. It was 44 and clear at observation. It sounds like there's a good chance for PM showers, so be prepared. I had a nice hike in the rain down Alum. My trusty umbrella kept me dry for the trip. I got some lunch in town (Thanks for the early Christmas gift, Chris & Allyson!) and then hiked back up Rainbow Falls. The rain just about quit, which made for a warm hike up. I can't believe that I was able to hike up the tallest peak east of the Mississippi in shorts and a t-shirt. A day before winter solstice, no less! It is officially unusually warm. I'll be indoors reading, finishing some projects and taking a well-earned zero day.

So when did you go to Mount Mitchell?

Highest peak east of the mighty Miss does go to Mt Mitchell in the Black Mountains of Yancey County, NC. In fact, LeConte checks in at #7. Clingman's Dome and Mt Guyot in the Smokies and four of the peaks in the Blacks are taller. If you get a chance, the Black Mtn Ridge trail is quite a challenge that gets about six of the top ten. Apologies for the geography lesson. Wish I could get to spend as much time up there as you do. Enjoy!

@tomk - he was referring to LeConte. While Mitchell is the Highest peak east of the Mississippi, LeConte is the tallest from base to peak.

I think the the best way to describe it, is to say Mt Leconte has the biggest relief from base to summit. Saying tallest is a bit confussing. Hope you get to ski it before long.
