Is It April Fools Day?

You will never hear me say, "the ground is too warm for the snow to stick", again. Mother Nature proved me wrong. Spring on the mountain delivered 12" of snow last night. There are drifts that are more like a foot and half to two feet. The high yesterday went from 47º to a low of 17º. Now, that, is what spring is like in the Smokies. You never know what the weather is going to do. It is so important to be prepared.

The Park Service is trying to plow Hwy 441. They said it is slow going. As of now, the road is closed. Cherokee Orchard is open to the Rainbow Falls trailhead. Bullhead and Rainbow are going to be the most traveled trails today. Please be careful if you are hiking up today. Start early and take your time. We will have the hot chocolate ready for you. Now, time to go shovel the steps.

Beautiful photo! With 12 inches of snow it doesn't matter how warm the ground is, it's going to stick!

Morning to all, some ask me why I pack so much for a day trip. I try to keep my pack at 20 lbs. I tell them even though its harder on me, I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Sometimes you run across people that you can share with also. Weather changes fast up there. Safe hiking to all

Old Man Winter just doesn't want to let go this year! Those are some beautiful pictures. Gotta say, even though I'm fed up with the snow for the year, I wouldn't mind being there for that!!!!

Well we were holding out hope that 441 might be open by the time we got to Cherokee from Atlanta, but it's not. We're gonna have to drive around.

Just got home after a week in the Smokies, and stayed up at the lodge on the 27th. Hiked up in snow and ice, kind of slow but no problems and a change from our other trips. Thanks for the great food & fun on the mountain and all your hard work. Already thinking about planning our next trip!

I ran up to newfound gap after work, to take photos of our last(?) snow. I stopped at Alum on the way down to get pics at the trailhead. I ran into two gentlemen who had spent the night at the SHELTER up there! wow....talk about adventure! They were soaking wet, and the trailhead was a melting slush bucket....my boots were wet before getting to the first bridge! yuk! Good luck to all on the trail today and tomorrow. I hope to trek up/down on Tues, if things go in my favor (may even drag the hubby for his first trip up). Do you think by tues I will need traction devices? I am sure the snow will melt, but am worried about ice. I guess I will play it safe and pack them! Happy snowball fights to you up top!
