Hopefully, day 4 will be the day. The helicopter was not able to make it to town yesterday. The pilot seems to think they can be here by noon today. As of right now, the valley is socked in. We would not be able to fly at the moment. At least we have another gorgeous day up top. The high yesterday was 49º with a low of 26º.
There are plenty of floors to scrub and windows to clean. The crew has been working hard to get the lodge ready for our first guests next Monday.

Beth, I read on facebook that Trillium Gap and the road leading to it are closed until the end of the month to work on downed trees. You may want to check with the park if you intend to take this trail.

We're going up next Thursday. We got an email from the reservation office that Roaring Fork Road is closed till April 11, so there would be no direct acces to Trillium Gap trail. You'd have to hike the extra mileage from the Rainbow Falls lot if you wanted that one.

I've done the hike up Trillium Gap from the Rainbow Falls trailhead and found it easier than I expected. It's 8.8 miles, I believe. Honestly, I wasn't any more spent after finishing that route than the 6.6 miles up the Rainbow Falls trail.

Sounds like you folks are doing a noble job up there. Can't wait to meet you all on my first climb this April 23. I'm dancing!

I've joined the "dance" and I'm willing to "sacrifice" a stack of pancakes, scrambled eggs & ham if that'll help.

This is one of the few times you wish you had gas.

It would be a bummer if the airlift couldn't happen before guests arrive. Supplies would have to be shuttled up the mountain on foot. That would create the unfortunate circumstance of an actual backcountry experience, far from the resort situation we all love about LeConte.

We sure are praying its a GO today...weather channel shows full sun for all lower elevations surrounding you, so hopefully it will clear for y'all. Every time I check the blog, I'm hopeful of reading that the airlift has started. Guess I'd better start dancing...

We headed up to Charlie's Bunion today and before 10 AM is was clear and sunny....so I am hoping you had your drop. We kept listening for choppers, but heard nothing as of 1 PM when we finished. sigh. Best of luck to you all! I plan to come up top once Trillium opens on the 11th. I hope all goes well this week, and thanks for all you do!

We're thinking of hiking to Leconte Friday morning (3/21) from the Alum Cave trail head. What are the trail conditions & is it too early to make the hike?

Trail conditions will be fine with the recent weather. If you are a seasoned hiker it should take 2-2.5 hrs to make the trip up.

I live in G-burg and only seen one helicopter leaving the Mt. around 6pm. Must have missed it on the way in, don't know how! Comments are closed.
