Happy New Year,

It’s currently -4 degrees and above the clouds up top. Yesterday’s high was 20 degrees with an overnight low of -6. We have .25” of snow on the ground. There have been numerous road closures due to ice and snow – including Hwy 441 between Cherokee and Gatlinburg.

Hot chili kept me warm as I awaited the final hour of 2017. The clouds had cleared, leaving an inversion below. Above the clouds, we marched to the Cliff Top. Bundled up in negative temperatures, I welcomed the new year…

…fireworks thundered below.

~

More tired than the day before, I woke before the sunrise. I was excited to see the new year sun. My camera soon went into action – capturing the morning colors. It was going to be a great new year.

Onward,
Seth

I have been fortunate to visit many beautiful places. My “photos” always fall short of capturing the beauty. Your wonderful photos do capture the beauty of the Mtn. Thank you.

Seth, Good morning. This was a great start to the year. Love the time laps. Was wondering what you shot that with and your other photos as well. Enjoy greatly keeping up with the blog. Thanks so much for sharing, taking the time to reflect for us and letting many of us be envious we don't have your job.... Thanks, Blessings and hope to cross paths.

Happy New Year Seth. Was it your ran into on the trail up to Cliff Tops Saturday morning about 10:00? Didn't get a chance to tell you that your blog is great and photography is even better! Hope your time up top is rewarding and enjoyable. May run into you (again?) in the next few months...

Just discovered your blog and have enjoyed reading it daily. I have been up 12 times with my pr of 2:45 up and down. Stay warm because there is nothing like winter in the mountains. One of my favorite spots to backpack in the winter is the Shining Rock Wilderness. I was there in 1985 hiked out in -10 degrees before it hit -35 that night. Rick

We came up yesterday to end the year ‘up yonder’. Amazing day, got to meet Guy, from New Orleans. We’ll have to meet you next month Seth! Well actually this month keeping with ‘once a month’ mindset. If the weather is right may crash in shelter. Onward!

Hi! I was just wondering if you have any word if Rainbow Falls has frozen over this year. We went a few years ago and missed it by one day. It broke overnight but it was still a sight to see with all the blue ice chunks.
