Good morning, 9:30AM It’s currently 43 degrees – cloudy, wet and windy. Our high for yesterday was 43 degrees, with an overnight low of 36. -- The warm glow of the kitchen created a stark contrast with the world outside. Good coffee and flavorful spices would greet me when I returned from my morning rounds. I admired the scene, put on my jacket, and trudged out of the kitchen. Walking up the mountain, I pondered the strength of mother nature. The wind howled – like it had done for the last 12 hours. Even the mature trees wagged back and forth in the wind’s fury. There was a unique beauty in the wild wind. I appreciated the scene and wondered what the world might look like just above this grey windstorm. Entertaining the thought, I made for the lodge… …the thought of coffee encroached on my mind. Onward, Seth “Many men go fishing all their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” – Henry David Thoreau

Along the lines of the warm glow of a lantern, can you shed a little light onto your daily/weekly responsibilities as a winter caretaker? It's not all fun and games, right?

Do those Cast Iron pans need some oil and perhaps a cleaning first?

The picture of skillets reminds me of my grandmothers story. As a young bride a neighbor brought over a skillet of cornbread. To thank the lady she cleaned all that black gunk off and took back the shinny pan. The neighbor told her she might as well keep the pan. "It is ruined, it took me years to build up the surface on that skillet."

Thanks for the post for Jan. 11...on.my trips to LeConte, the one thing that I always noted was the wind, whether it was a stiff September gale arriving from an Atlantic storm or a gentle breeze easing the humidity of a late July afternoon.
