SUNDAY, JANUARY 15th, 2023Good Morning!
The sky is clear and blue and the sun is shining on top of Mt LeConte today! It looks like today will be a good one! 18 degrees and 16 inches of dry powder snow at 7:00 AM this morning. Of course Highway 441 is still closed this morning. With all of the clouds and snow the past few days I had a little trouble with keeping my phone charged with the solar panels. I attempted to send a post to you yesterday, but I’m not sure that I had enough power to get it out to you. I only saw two day hikers yesterday. I was in the process of breaking trail to Cliff Tops when I saw them. The sunset last night was awesome, with an inversion of clouds below me! Friendly reminder that the lodge is closed and there are no services provided. No warm beverages being sold, and no cabins to step inside, and no bribes accepted. Should you choose to visit the mountain in these snowy and cold conditions, you are outside in the elements for the duration. Please plan your adventure accordingly and responsibly so as not to put yourself or others at unnecessary risk. Stay warm, stay safe!! WILDCAT/Bert

For me it's somewhat of an phenomenon that snow falls like this in the Southern Appalachian's! We're it not for the steep heights in the Great Smoky Mountains my beloved Mt.Mitchell NC would definitely see much more snow... but the Great Mitchell snowstorm will likely fall in late February or March... who knows, maybe even April!! Enjoy your winter wonderland high on Leconte!!
