Good morning, 8:30AM It’s currently 14 degrees and clear. Yesterday’s high was 32 degrees, with an overnight low of 12 degrees. -- Walking through the pre-dawn light, I thought about sunrise. Why was it so important to me to be out and about every morning? I could be laying in bed, watching the sky change from my comfortable loft window. I think it has to do with the process and the unknown. The cold unlit walk across Mt. Le Conte never ceased to raise questions in my head. In one hour, the gloomy landscape I dawdled through would be transformed into a different spectacle. Witnessing the mountain change, everyday, inspired me to consistently leave the warmth of the loft. I loved the process - the transformation. The unknown outcome of the sun’s influence on the Great Smoky Mountains multiplied the pull to saunter about. Still thinking, I arrived at my destination… The mountain morphed before me. Onward, Seth “I only went out for a walk, and finally concluded to stay out until sundown: for going out, I found, was really going in.” - John Muir

I live near Cherokee, N.C. and for many years an old Cherokee Indian woman was a family friend. She was a wonderful lady who passed away recently, but before she did she told me that at or near where Leconte Lodge now sits there is an ancient Cherokee burial ground and I was wondering if you or anyone here knew anything about this and whether there is any truth to it. I believe it's a possibility at least. Thanks.

Ok. The top picture is not Apollo Overlook, I'm changing my view to Myrtle Point looking left. I think I recognize to lone pine left.

Just when I think your pictures can't get any better, you wow me again! Love the pic of the lantern on the ice! Very LeConte! One of our children's favorite parts of experiencing LeConte Lodge was no electricity. Thanks, Seth! Our family took a night hike by lantern light with a park ranger a few years ago. Even though it was during the warmer months, your picture definitely took me back. Happy trails!

The shot was taken looking at the junction of Alum Cave Trail and Rainbow Falls Trail.

Great view of the frozen fridged trail illuminated by the warm golden glow of an old fashion lantern- could of been a scene from many years ago.
