Good Morning, It’s currently 36 degrees and cloudy up top. Mt. Le Conte received .2” inches of rain. The 24-hour high was 36 degrees with a low of 32 degrees. -- I woke and began walking around the misty lodge. Gloomy evergreens dripped around me as I drifted through the somber darkness. The mountain began to take on a bluish hue. The miners lamp in my right hand served as my only beacon of light - my beacon of warmth. I began thinking about the cloudy view in front of me. It was no less beautiful than the clear cloudless sunrises from the week prior. The grey background helped me find a closer focal point. The blanket of clouds always helped me see and appreciate the finer details of Mt. Le Conte’s landscape. With no sun stealing all the attention, I continued to walk... ...exploring the sights patiently waiting under my nose. Onward, Seth “When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” - Marcus Aurelius

I have to tell you that the photos with the lantern in them are so beautiful, mysterious and serene. I have a small collection of old vintage lanterns and just love them.

The pictures with the lanterns are especially to my liking. Tammy (Tx) says she has a small collection of lanterns. I have a large collection of lanterns which include one like the one in your pictures and many like the ones in the Mt LeConte dining hall pictures. I began my collection many years ago because of my memories of my family cabin in Gatlinburg and the magic they imparted to a stay there. We had no electricity so the only light was from the fireplace, lanterns and flashlights. So cozy! The lantern light casts a glow like no other type. The addition of the lanterns in your pictures makes them even more special! Thank you!

Jeand, thanks for sharing your story about your lanterns and how they were actually used to light your family cabin in the Smokies. A lit lantern also symbolizes warmth to me. The kerosene lamps lighting up the lodge cabins and dining room are one of my most favorite aspects of LeConte Lodge during my stays.

Love your stunning photos! I absolutely love the one with the lantern in the foreground on the left and the cabins on the right. Would you mind sharing what lens you shot with, filter, settings? Beautiful capture and amazing work.
