Good morning folks,
Its a breezy, bone chilling start to the morning. The high yesterday reached 30 degrees. The overnight low dipped down to 19 degrees. It is currently 23 degrees. The snow depth still stands at 10 inches. Surges of wind push through camp blowing snow around like I’m in my own LeConte snow globe. Winter weather looks to return Thursday afternoon into Friday morning. Upwards of 5 inches are expected in the highest peaks of the Smokies. Park roads still remain closed until trees are cleared and snow/ice are not an issue. Park staff have been working very hard to clear roads folks. Since my return the mountain has finally shifted into winter and the snow keeps coming. I welcome it. Have a good one folks. Another blue bird day yesterday with abundant sunshine and plenty of snow. French toast was on the menu for breakfast with real maple syrup. Today looks to be a good day to rest and do some reading. See you at the top! PNUT

Happy New Year PNUT, happy to see you're enjoying some real LeConte winter after the warm December. My most memorable trip there was in 2011 with 34" snow up top, don't know if you were around back then or if there has been that much since. Gained some cred with my friends in New hampshire and Montana that we do have good winter camping in the South.

Hello! I was wondering if the general public were able to hike Leconte in the snowy conditions and if so, how long this hike takes in the current conditions. Thanks so much!

Yes, I did it last year with about 24" up there in places, the Lodge is totally closed though, make sure you have proper gear such as spikes, hiking poles and warm layers. I did have cell phone coverage the entire trip so that is nice as insurance in case something goes wrong. Take a camp stove or an MRE and enjoy a warm lunch up on Cliff Tops. It took me about 6 hours in total (I stopped and took a lot of photos) going from Rainbow Falls trailhead since 441 was closed.

PNUT, I found this blog last year and enjoy reading it. Thank you for putting the time into it and keep up the good work my friend! Also, enjoy the snow, here in KY we are supposed to get some tomorrow which I'm excited about.
