Finally, a little sunshine! Yesterday stayed cloudy, but barely any rain fell, only .01". The high was a much warmer 63 and the low was 49 over night. Today it is a warm 65 already and partly sunny! A very welcome change from the constant rain and clouds over the past week and some change. Keep that sunshine coming!

I hiked up Mt. LeConte last Sunday, 6/28 with 3 of my grandsons (16, 14. & 9) via the Alum Cave Trail. Spent the night & hiked down the next day via the Trillium Gap Trail. Wonderful time, delicious food & quality time with 3 great young men. I'm very proud of them! BTW - I'm looking for similar experiences to share with them down the road. Thanks for the hospitality & any ideas!

Great to hear! You are SO blessed. Will never have that experience at 74 now with no grandson in site.. :) HAGD @ 3:32 pm Ga. time

I'm sorry to hear that Norman! I have three grandsons 17; 14 and 10 and two granddaughters 13 and 14. They are a blessing but as you said, I'm the one blessed! HABD (Have A Blessed Day)

We are hiking up to the lodge next week. How much water do you recommend packing with us? Should we invest in a water filter for hikers or just bring bottled water? Thanks in advance for the advice!

Norma-I usually take 4 16oz bottles of water hiking Alum, and only use 2 of them on the way up. That way I have extra either if I need it or run into someone on the trail that needs it. Then like Tomk said, you can refill up on the top.

Norma - we hiked the boulevard trail to the lodge on Monday (7/6) and returned via same on Tuesday (7/7). For each trip I easily polished off a quart Nalgene and probably could've done another pint. One member of our party didn't drink enough and ended-up with a dehydration-induced headache that took a couple of hours to alleviate once we got down and had more to drink. I always seem to have snacks left over - never as hungry on a hike as I think I'll be - but I'm always glad to have water. No need for a filter - but take 2-3 pints each and you should be fine.

Enjoy your trip!

3 qts for Alum, 4 for Bullhead, Rainbow, or Trillium and 6 for Boulevard and Brushy; Make about half of it Gatorade. Drink before you are thirsty, make it a goal to arrive empty, There is water available at the top for the trip down, Do not bother with a filter for the day trip, you use that on the AT or when multiple days hiking are required.

That's a lot of water and quite heavy; One quart would do it, but to each his/her own.

Phillip, I was thinking the same thing. 4 quarts water weighs 8 pounds. That's a lot of weight to carry up the mountain. I would fill up my camelback and take water filtration, much more efficient weight wise.

i used to carry a full bladder (100 oz) and generally arrived at the top with some left. during normal weather conditions now, i carry 2 17 oz bottles and my sawyer 16 oz filter empty. has worked well the last 3 times i went up rainbow and alum. sip as you go, guzzle the bottle at water sources and refill form the filter. springs on alum are really sensitive to dry conditions so having a little extra wont hurt. weather conditions really do affect how much water you need to start with.

Doug, even though it may be boring and trivial for you to read, I'm glad you're posting again. I find your posts interesting most of the time, but a bit long winded occasionally. That's your choice, but it may lead to critical comments. Remember, Love conquers Hate. HAGD

Yes, Franklin, I do find some things on here boring and trivial and I'm sure there are plenty of others that do so also. However, I try to never make any disparaging comments on this site, but I will speak my mind on my own site. I am a big supporter of the lodge if telling people I know all over the world about it qualifies me as a supporter, and in the past I have gotten a bit long winded. I am not the only person who has done so, but I am singled out it seems when I do write longer posts and I have not written anything at length for quite some time, saving that for my site. If I get critical comments, then so be it. It doesn't bother me. I will continue to promote the lodge experience and offer advice if asked. G'day

YEAH!!! Doug y your back! I checked your site yesterday (I think....been sick this week) and didn't see any new posts so I just came to the conclusion that we might not hear from you again! So glad.your back! I agree with Franklin!

Doug y, enjoyed reading your comments on your website. Question, is the guest book something new you just set up there. I'll be asking advice on what to put in my backpack from you and the others when it gets closer to my trip to the park. Admittedly, I'm one of the I'll prepared hikers, but I've never hiked longer than 5 -6 miles round trip. But hope to change that this next trip!
