June 10th Babies

Baby juncos a day later
One of my favorite things about this time of the year is looking for Junco nests. The crew found this one on Alum Cave trail. We have had so much fun watching it and waiting for the babies to arrive. Well, they did, yesterday. I guess I now share my birthday with 4 little baby juncos. Bethany described them as looking like dust bunnies. I thought that was a very good description. I look forward to watching them over the next week and seeing them get big enough to fledge the nest. We have also spotted a fawn around camp. The does look like they are getting bigger and possibly ready to have more babies. The summer brings on new life in so many ways on the top of Mt. LeConte.

Yesterday was on again off again as far as precipitation. We saw a little bit of sun through out the day. The high was 61º with a low of 50º. It is currently foggy and wet.

Does anyone know what time the llamas arrive at Grotto Falls trail-head for their trek to LeConte.

I think at dawn. It takes them approximately four hours. We hiked up Trillium last months hoping to pass them up on the trail or even see them coming down as we were going up. However, for some reason they were still at the lodge when we got up there at around 1pm, they were enjoying some treats.

Just want to give a shout out to Allyson, JP and Nathan for the inspiration for this 66 yr old grandmother to climb Leconte this past weekend with her 14 year old grandson. After following the blog for more than two years you cannot imagine my delight at reaching this special place. I had to pinch myself to believe that I was finally here. And I will return! Thanks also to all the regular bloggers who post such helpful advice to help this newbie plan her climb. And keep 'em coming, my peer, Doug Y! Appreciate you all.

Congratulations, did you spend the night or day hike?

Day hike only. Last October I didn't know I would get the nerve to attempt the hike. Grandson insists we stay next year. Can't wait to try my luck in the "lottery" come October.

That is absolutely great !! You are now a member of a select "club". I hope to perhaps meet you and your grandson on the trail someday. Good luck getting a reservation, too. Just a heart-warming story you gave us all !

92 and VERY high humidity in good ole NE alabama. Sure do wish I was up top today. Allyson, I will be needing clear skies and cool weather up top for the 4th, just giving you little advanced notice so you can get that in the works!!!! LOL

Brian N bama-have you given any thought about what time you want to start up on the afternoon of the 4th?

Steve D, I am thinking I want to arrive just in time for sunset.Still uncertain who in my family is going up, so I am not sure how long it will take us to get to the top. I don't plan on killing myself on the hike up so I am planning on taking about 3-4 hrs to get to the top.

I always hate hijacking Allyson's lovely posts, but nobody ever seems to check the other forums...Is it feasible to hike up Rainbow Falls and down Trillium Gap and then extend the hike (looks like a little over two miles) to hike back to the RF parking lot and get our cars? Hiking up in July with four kids. Thanks for the advice!

Jenny, Your looking at 15.3 miles, if you don't mind the added distance it is a good roundtrip hike. I don't know if you have hiked either of this trails or not but both have very pretty waterfalls. Grotto Falls on the Trillium Gap Trail is one of my favorites in the park. The Rainbow Falls Trail is very rocky and steep near the top. The added little over two miles to R. F. parking lot is not bad at all. I have probably included too much information but I hope it helps and Happy Hiking.

No, that helps a lot! Thanks. We're staying at the lodge, so it won't be a continuous hike. I've only been up there once--went up Alum and came down Trillium. Thanks!
