A dear, deer friend of the lodge.

Blogging on a Sunday afternoon....and what a beautiful day it has been! Yesterday was dark and gloomy and a steady 1.55" of rain fell. The high was only 59 and the low this morning was a very chilly 44. Today we have had a flawlessly blue sky and the temperature has stayed in the upper 50's, a much needed relief from the heat of last week. Everyone have a wonderful day!

Hi all- had to report on our siting today. My wife and I arrived at Cade's Cove early this morning-and it was so beautiful with some early morning fog and low clouds hanging over the mountain ridges. Also, the temp was a cool 58 degrees-Nice! Anyway, just a few minutes into the drive we saw some movement in a field which turned out to be a coyote. He was within 20 yards of us. And right behind him about 10 yards was a large doe chasing him out of her territory! It was so funny looking and seemed so odd that a doe could do that. Anybody on this blog know anything about coyotes? Only the second time I have ever seen one around here. Happy trails!

Steve D ,coyotes will eat anything that doesn't eat them first. They will eat your pets,cats,small dogs.Several adult coyotes will chase down and eat large dogs,deer and fawn,livestock,young turkeys and basically anything that can't fly or climb a tree to escape.They will come right in your yard,even in heavily populated neighborhoods to eat dog and cat food or.garbage.Believe it or not, they love watermelon and can destroy a patch in one night. For my part,in Alabama they should have put a bounty on them 15 years ago to help control them. They are like kudzu and fire ants. They have no useful purpose but are here to stay.

Steve, as soon as you begin the one way loop, I've seen a coyote on several occasions running through the field on your left where the horses or kept. Last summer, we saw one there right at dusk. That is funny that the doe was chasing it. If this is the time of the year when they have fawns, I guess that could have been her reason. We used to have them bad here. One year, we were in such a bad drought that they were coming into town for food and water. We also don't live right on the outer edge of town either. All my neighbors were losing their cats, but we still had ours. They couldn't figure out how that was, until one evening one of my neighbors inside cat was sitting by their patio doors looking out and a coyote ran smack into the glass door trying to get at the cat! That same summer I actually saw one trotting down our street. We then figured out that the reason my cats survived is we had a fence and the neighbors who lost pets, didn't. I can't stand to hear of group of them howling because I figure they've just caught someone's pet! People were even missing small dogs!

Coyotes have become an increasing problem here in Illinois for quite some time. Before three years ago, I'd never seen one in my life. Now I see them on a regular basis right out side the city limits when I'm running and walking on the fitness trail. One day I was walking an I saw one in a field -- he saw me as well -- and just stood and looked at me for a few moments, making a rather aggressive snorting noise. I was looking for a branch or something to defend myself if he suddenly decided to charge me! : )

I should point out that I now know Coyote attacks o human are extremely rare. But before that day, everything I knew about these animals I learned from watching Roadrunner cartoons. To this day, none of the Coyotes I've ever encountered were in possession of mail order shipments from the Acme Company.

Any news on the girl that had to be rescued from off a cliff near Alum Cave ?

I saw two conflicting reports on this girl. One stated she was in stable condition; the other that she required no medical attention, and was released to her family.

Same here. I searched for any update on her and found the same. They airlifted her out and she required no medical attention. Wish I knew if she slipped off the trail somewhere around Alum bluffs or was she climbing somewhere around the bluffs and got stuck. Just wondering. Also, kind of sounds like she was by herself.

Kent, chucked at your Roadrunner comments. I can't recall if you were one of the guys in on the Yogi and Boo Boo comments a few months back, but ya'll continue to humor me! Brings back fond memories of those old cartoons. About the coyotes...the one that growled at you.... I guess they could be rabid. Years ago, here in Tx (they might still do it, I don't know) they would drop from the air, food with rabies vaccine in it, hoping to reduce the amount of rabies occurring in coyotes here. I've just always had a negative attitude towards the scrappy coyote, but they have a purpose like every living thing on earth.

I didn't think about that coyote being rabid. Perhaps I'm lucky to have survived that encounter.

Kent, I see you and I have the same type of humor as the Roadrunner and Yogi Bear are two of my favorite cartoons from my childhood.......and now I'm totally into Seinfeld. Do you suppose there is some type of connection there? I have faith that you can certainly come up with one. "Exit, stage left".

Yeah, I had forgotten about Snagglepuss. He sounded like the cowardly lion in Wizard of Oz. Didn't he talk with a lisp (sp?)or am I getting him mixed up with another character? Yeah....I don't know why, but I laughed for days after you guy's conversation about Yogi and Booboo. Simple mind, simple pleasures!
