Good night, sun.
My, what indecisive weather we're having today. Yesterday was cool all day, the high 54 and the low 45. A beautiful lightning storm rolled in at dusk last night and it was a spectacular show to watch from the back porch of the dining room. Early thunderstorms dropped .56" of rain this morning before breakfast and it looked like that was the trend for the day but as of right now, I am looking at clear skies and it is a very comfortable 59 degrees. I'd say just pack for all the weathers today!

A real hiker is always prepared for "all the weathers." ; )

Yes, that's quite right Kent. And, a real hiker doesn't mind which trails he hikes.

Sorta funny in a way, a "real' hiker. Yea, I did carry all my winter gear this weekend on the AT just to be prepared, sorry, couldn't resist.

With Alum being closed Mondays thru Thursday, which alternate trail do you find most people taking?

We had a great time up there on Monday night. Unfortunately when we got to our car on Tuesday we discovered that a bear had slashed one of our tires!

Steve

Really curious how you knew it was a bear? Was there other damage that showed that a bear was there or was this just vandalism?

Would like to know how you knew it was a bear?? HAGD @ 10:24 am

Someone left a very well written note describing th incident. Apparently the bear was chased off before it could do more damage. So there's that and the claw marks...

That was no bear. It was probably some drunken redneck from Maryville.

I got the tire off today and it definitely looks like a claw scraped across the tire. I don't know how to post a picture on here but if it was done by a person then they must have spent a long time trying to recreate claw marks. Are there a lot of vandals driving the Roaring Fork motor trail this time of year leaving eloquent notes on cars after trying to simulate a bear claw? I think Occam's razor prevails in this case.

Sorry to hear about the damage your vehicle. I'm wondering if you had any food in your car? Bear have a sense of smell that is over 2,000 time greater than a human's.

probably smelled the p-nut butter hidden in the tire...

That's interesting, I guess his claw must have got the tire while he was messing with the car cause I doubt he had his pocket knife with him......

That's interesting. When my husband and I flew into Nashville last summer, it was dark and late when we picked up our rental. We inspected it before we left the airport, but garage was kinda dark. Drove straight to our hotel. When we went out to the SUV the next morning, there were scratches down the right side. They were long and wide apart. We jokingly said it looked like a bear had scratched it because it was wider than a dog paw! We both agreed they had to have already been there when we picked up the rental for we had not stopped on our drive into Gatlinburg. Now it makes me wonder!

I was telling my husband about this whole discussion about the bear clawing the tire and puncturing it. At first he was totally skeptical saying no way that could happen, but then I reminded him that we had run through a fast food restaurant on our way to Gatlinburg from Nashville and picked up some fried chicken to eat on the way. Our hotel was on the edge of the park and I've seen video of bears in town. So who knows, a bear could have smelled the scent of chicken around our car and put those scratches on it. I've always read and been told that they have a very keen sense of smell. We were joking about the scratches being a bear"s but could have been. I know grizzlies can do some real damage, and I have had the pleasure of observing one relatively close up. Oh my word, he (or she) was massive and I would never want to see one on my own while hiking....so maybe a large black bear could also do some damage to our vehicles.
