Morning y'all,

It's a blustery morning up top. The high yesterday reached 43 degrees. The overnight low was 40 degrees. It was 42 degrees and mostly cloudy at 7am observation. The mountain received 1.84 inches of rain yesterday, storming through much of the afternoon and evening. There were some pretty high winds, as well. There is no more snow up top and very little remaining on the trails. The trails are pretty saturated, so expect wet feet if you plan to hike up today!

I will be taking the next few days off the mountain. The blog will return on the 27th. Enjoy the holiday season!

Those marks on that tree look more like they were made by a bear or even lightning, but who really knows ? Jack Hanna maybe !?

Kent
12/24/2014 06:03:49 am

Oh, I really doubt those marks were made by Jack Hanna. ; )

The photo shows a hemlock suffering from the effects of the hemlock woolly adelgid, perhaps the most devastating event to occur within the Smokies forests. They used to be the monarchs of the forests. What we see is the early stages of the bark peeling off. Eventually it becomes a mulch pile. The good news is that the Park Service has treated at least a few large prominent trees (like by the Enloe Creek metal bridge), and perhaps with cold temps over a few winters, the adelgids won't survive.

Well, Jenny B., I believe your analysis of what is happening to that tree is the correct one. You never shy away from posting about your exploits, achievements, and knowledge. Your bragging about these is what you do and thanks for sharing this latest bit of information.

Barbara

Philip. I don't think Jenny is bragging. Territorial marking by bears would not be in a straight line. I was wondering what the marks really were and am glad for Jenny's astute observation. Her woods knowledge is fabulous and I for one am happy to benefit from her experience

P.s. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all

Kent

Exactly, Barbara. I for one am always appreciate of people like Jenny who are willing to share their vast knowledge of the Smokies for the education of others. In turn, I enjoy passing along what I learn to others. It's what I love most about this blog.

Merry Christmas to all the LeConte bloggers from way down south. A gift indeed to enjoy this mountain throughout the year. The sweet scents of balsam and morning light rising. Joy to all this day!

I'd love to be wandering about the summit today, just reveling in all the treasures around every corner. That would be a perfect day. There's something about this mountain that gets into your system at a molecular level and alters it in a positive way.

It is evident that a lot of the bloggers from a year or so ago have quit coming or posting comments. This blog isn't what it used to be.
