After a chilly 19 night we received a hot flash of 46 up here yesterday! The snow is melting, refreezing, and making a generally questionable mess. Patches of ice, slush, and snow spot camp and more than likely the trails are equally hectic. It's great to see all the college groups on spring break enjoying the mountain and guests who brave the icey trails to get up here! They will more than likely melt more today but please be careful, it's bound to be squirrelly.
The moon was as bright as the noon sun on this snow this dark, clear, windy morning. Let your imaginations run wild with that one. LL out.

Do you think any of the trails will be manageable without spikes today?

If you have to ask, then take them. Just like an umbrella, if it looks like rain, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Love the first of many great blog posts. So glad we didn't have those conditions during the airlift. Hope your 1st hikers/ lodgers stay safe. I remember clearing ice and snow during the 2011 airlift.

We hiked up the mountain today, 3/23. Great hike! We left the parking lot at 7:25am and micro-spikes were much needed. It had warmed up and started to get slushy after 12pm when we were headed down but the spikes came in handy. Beautiful day and awesome hike, just make sure to have spikes if you can just in case!

We were supposed to arrive today for two nights but got delayed. We will arrive tomorrow midday. Biscuits by lamplight. Quite a change for even an experienced cook to assemble food by lantern light. I for one, really appreciate the daily photos of Lodge Life. I don't live far away, as the raven flies, but LeConte is a special place. Been up there twice this year, have to come up again to get a T-Shirt. Thanks for the daily posts. Comments are closed.
