March.25.2016. ...and then the wind almost blew us off the mountain

3/25/2016

A warm 35 gave way to an even warmer 54. The majority of the day was sunny but a strong wind rolled in around 12, bringing stronger rains in the late afternoon.

As of 6am it is misty and drizzly.

If you come up today waterproof is key!

We have llamas coming up today! Hopefully they get here safely and don't get blown off the trail.

Yesterday was crew member Matthew McConaugheys birthday! We made sure it was one he would never forget.

Safe hikes everyone.

My family is wanting to hike up to the Lodge tomorrow. We have two boys, 7 & 9. Any ideas which trail will be the safest? The park service wasn't really sure if any of them would be clear enough for us. They knew that Alum Cave was pretty icy and that someone had to be rescued off Rainbow yesterday. We don't have spikes☹️.

Not Alum Cave. There are areas near the top where a fall is possible but highly unlikely. Still, that comes off the list.
From there you have Rainbow, (WHY did the person need a rescue?) it's a nice trail! And Bullhead, also nice especially in the winter. Then, I suppose, Trillium Gap, on a lot of people's favorites list. It is the one you are least likely to have falls or anything else.

I would get traction for the entire family. Doesn't cost too much and saved us more than once! It is a beautiful hike and we'll worth the $!

I should have added, if it's icy, even with spikes, Alum Cave trail can be pretty treacherous. Of course, I don't know what they've been able to do since they began work on the trail last year. Some passes are narrow with a long drop.... ok for adults, but I'd be careful with children.

We took Trillium up from Grotto Falls. It was absolutely beautiful. We made it safely all the way up and even got to take pictures with the Easter bunny!

Lots of wind here in Kentucky, too.

"I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving: To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it - but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor."

Beautiful and truthful quote, Doug.

I was up there 8/28/2014 for the first time. I am from NH but I like it so much I would love to work up there.

That's funny you guys! Matt M. lives right here in Austin, Texas and yesterday was not his birthday. Are ya'll seeing if we are paying attention? Whomever's birthday you celebrated yesterday (or a random reason to party), I hope it was a good one! Hehe! Have a beautiful day!

Yes the wind was amazing yesterday. Didn't even bother with Cliff Tops. But today started out in a major fog down in the parking lot but beautiful by the time I arrived at the Lodge. The inversion was amazing. See you tomorrow with the GSMA gang.

Are the days set yet for when the llamas will be coming up this year?

Hiked up this morning and the group that was coming down seemed really loud--Just hope guests show some respect to others and act human during their stay.
