Foggy flats on Alum.
Quite the foggy start to the weekend this morning. Yesterday's high was 63 and the low was 43. Right now we are stuck in a cloud and the temperature is 56. We have rain in the forecast today, so everyone be aware! Also, Alum Cave is open for the weekend! Everyone have a pleasant day and we will see you up top!

One of my favorite pictures....because I know I'm close when I get to this spot on the trail.

Tammy, you asked yesterday about Gregory's Bald. I have not been to that one but have hiked to Andrews Bald which is a great place to see the beauty of the Smokies. A 3.5 rt trail that begins at Clingmans Dome. It used to be pretty strenuous but they have recently done work on the trail and I think it is now classified as moderate. If you've not done this hike and want to experience the flowers, Spring and early summer are good times for it.

Yes, you know you are close when you see this sight. Having been up a few times, when I see the log steps at the top of Monotony Ridge I know the hard part is behind me

Love the photo of Thursdays sunrise. I was fortunate enough to see it in person from Myrtle Point! We woke up at 5:00 am to make it there about 40 prior to the actual sunrise and watch the sky light up with an amazing display of colors. Another wonderful trip to the lodge made even more special as it was my daughter's birthday. The cake and chorus of "Happy Birthday" by staff and guest were truly the icing on a memorable visit. We were part of a group guided by A Walk In The Woods. I can't say enough good things about Sam our guide and the whole experience. They have a couple more later this year if anyone is trying to get a nights stay and learn more about the flora and fauna of this great park. We even ran into a bear during our descent on Bull Head.

Thanks for the info! Maybe I'll try it some day. Love the pictures that have been posted from this stretch of alum. I think I've saved every one. Hope to see it in person later this year!

Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea;
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.
Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known. - Bilbo Baggins

May 15, 2015, is a day I'll never forget. My dad, Sylvester, turned 80 this year and all he wanted for his birthday was to hike to the top of Mt. Le Conte. It was his first hike! The two of us hiked to the top on the Alum Cave Trail stopping along the way to take in the great views, had lunch at the Lodge, got to see the llamas, and made it down where we celebrated with a big BBQ dinner. He certainly deserved it! Thanks for making a lasting memory!
