Sunset from Cliff Tops.
What a beautiful morning for walk in the woods! Yesterday was thick with clouds from beginning to end, leaving up with .3" of precipitation. The high was only 52 and the over night low dropped below freezing to 29....it felt hard to stay warm yesterday. Today, however, there is not a cloud in the sky and the temperature is already 40. It feels warm while you're moving in the sunshine, but stand still for too long and you might need an extra layer.

It is Memorial Day weekend which means it is going to be a very busy weekend for us and much busier on the trails than normal. Everyone remember to be courteous to fellow hikers and mindful of the beauty that you are surrounded by! Have a fun and safe Friday!

As usual, your sunset photos are excellent, Thanks. If you're very careful when at Cliff Tops you can look down across the ridge which is in the lower right of the top photo for today and see the top of the "Space Needle" in Gatlinburg and a bit of the buildings around it, etc. G'day

Great photos today! And, Doug, the ones on your site are excellent too. I can remember those sections of the trail just by looking at the pics. Keep on hiking!

Thank you for all the excellent pictures and great comments!
Kat, I would like to extend a big "Thank You" for your willingness to provide me with perfect directions to the steam boiler off Forney Creek Trail. Your directions and distances were right on! What a great find! Thank you again for making this possible for us.

cboone: Many thanks for your kind words and compliments; I'm glad I was a help to you. I have yet to upgrade my site to where folks can leave their comments, much like on here and your accolades inspire me to get off my butt and get to it ; I've been promising this for some time and just haven't quite been able to get to it; laziness perhaps. I began hiking in the Smokies in 1957 and they are my favorite in the lower 48 states. I have been lucky to have been a few places around the world but all I need these days is plenty of time in the Smokies, hiking mainly, and, of course, a few stays each year at the Lodge. I always leave my email address at the end of my narratives on my site and I answer all that I receive; once I upgrade my site that won't ne necessary. If you can hike but short distances and not-too-steep trails, then get out and do it ! I will post a few more from my recent trek up Alum. G'day

Doug, my knees are doing just fine. Will be trying them out in Germany in July but just tourist walking. Going to Colorado in Aug so hope to try them out there and of course in September will be doing the overnighter to LeConte. It will be a year by Sept so I should not have any problem at all. Going to buy some hiking poles...suggestions for what kind?

Carolyn , I'll take pics in Sept as we'll go up Alum and back down Trillium...but I'll have to have my grandson instruct me on how to post them as I'm not a real good techie.

Marilyn: how are you shuttling cars from Alum to Trillium? We're doing this in August and haven't figured out our logistics. Thanks

Barbara, if you don't have two cars you can arrange a shuttle with A Walk In The Woods guide service. I have used them for shuttles and guided hikes. Very professional and nice to be able to maximize you trail opportunities.

Marilyn: My knee has healed and recovered wonderfully; only residual effect is some numbness which I will always have but at least it's done well. I was able to get up to the Lodge April 9th with the only difficulty being the extra weight I was carrying right in front if me ! The knee performed like it is, a new one ! I bought a new pair of trekking poles a couple of months or so ago at the NOC store in Gatlinburg. Brand: "LEKI" and they are actually called women's poles but that made no difference to me. They are easily and quickly adjustable at two places in each pole which is the reason I chose them. $100 and worth the price. I spare no expense when it involves my hiking and camping gear. But there are plenty of poles to choose from. REI is another good place and is where I bought my old(er) ones some years back and they are till very functional. You see, the secret of life is: "The man, or woman, who dies with the most "toys", WINS !" g'day

Barbara, I'm fortunate in that my sister and I are hiking to LeConte and her husband is going down to Gatlinburg with us so he'll be dropping us off and picking us up but Paul's suggestion A Walk in the Woods is a good one. I haven't used them because I haven't had to but know people who did and were satisfied with their services.

Thanks Paul B and Marilyn. I will give them a call.
