Contrails in the sunset.
Good day, all! And what a lovely Saturday this is shaping up to be so far! Yesterday's high was 62 and the low was 47 and a few stray showers dropped only .03" of rain on us. Today has been partly cloudy and on the warmer side, already up to 55. This is a perfect day to get outside and hike up to see us on top!

Good morning ! Another beautiful view. My best friend and I are coming up Monday to stay with you all for our first time. We would like to make it up in time to see the lamas before they head back down. Can you give me an estimate of when they leave the lodge? AND, we would love to bring treats for the crew. Any special requests ? Can't promise but will gladly consider all requests :) Thanks for sharing this blog, we are reading it daily in anticipation of our hike And stay at the Leconte Lodge.

I think that the llamas leave the trailhead relatively early in the mornings, around first daylight or soon thereafter, and depart for the trip back down around 1:00p, but this may not be quite accurate.

No, no, no! Never feed the crew treats. They'll start following the guests around and become a real nuisance! ; )

We are planning to hike up Trillium Gap Trail in September and never have been passed Grotto Falls. What is the trail like?

good trail. lots of road grapes (its the trail the lamas use...). just a good slow steady climb. some good views as you get closer to the lodge. look for the double water falls about 3/4 the way up. I keep forgetting about them and have never saw them.

Kent, I cracked up when i read your response :)
Phillip, thanks for the info. we still haven't decided which trail we are taking up . I am hoping we can start early enough that we will get to the lodge before the llamas leave, but if it will be cutting it close we may just hike up Trillium so we won't miss them. We had planned on parking at the Rainbow trail parking, so not sure how we will work that out, but I am sure we will figure it out. May try and talk someone into giving us a ride so we don't have to take two cars or hike the extra 2 miles

We are paying for a shuttle from the hotel to the trail head & to pick us up the next day. I think it will be worth the cost for not having to find a parking space!!

It costs just a little more to go first class !! Enjoy.

Hi,
We plan on hiking to Mt. Leconte in a couple of weeks. Can you tell me the best trail to take? Thanks, Irene

Trilium, Rainbow Falls or Bullhead. All have their own identity, and offer a variety of scenery. The real plus, one parking spot gives you the option of any of the three.
