May.12.2016. Bear watch

5/12/2016

 Bears are everywhere it seems!

So many sighted by our guests yesterday, it's ridiculous.

If you come across a bear on the trail do not run from it! Instead make loud noises and stand your ground.

Clapping works wonders.

62 degrees with 49 overnight weather really seems to bring them out.

Keep your eyes and ears open and let us know where you see a bear.

Get out and enjoy this gorgeous weather today!

Did they all just wake up and get active recently?

No food--Bears have little too eat these days--and are on the hunt

Beautiful blue skies you are having! Sounds like it's a bear jamboree (or a bear jam)! Ha! Must be something on the mountain, or on the way up, they have found to eat.

I hope that the bear encounters are all peaceful and that the papa, momma, and baby bears learn that we humans are not what they need to survive. I also hope there are no incidents where hikers leave food for the bears, then the bears become aggressive toward humans and eventually have to be euthanized to protect humans. That very scenario happened a couple of years ago around Laurel Falls. Let's hope everyone remembers that "A Fed Bear Is a Dead Bear".
As for the weather, we wish we were there instead of overcast, hot, and mid-July sticky middle TN!

I agree, but you will never get tourists to stop feeding the bears; it just won't ever happen, and hoping to see a bear isn't too bad an idea IF you are prepared for a sudden encounter !! Poor bears.

according to Johnson city press, AT hiker was biten on the leg through his tent near spence field last night. hiker made it out with ranger help and was treated at hospital. bear came back and trashed 2 empty tents. same shelter I had one attempt to come in on me, made it about half way. my little girl scream scared her back far enough I could get the gate closed. bear sightings = good. bear encounters = bad...

I just read about that Laurel Falls encounter this past week. The article I read said the guy was about a foot from the bear trying to take a picture and it bit him. Are you kidding me? And, he still appeared to act like he was doing nothing wrong. Is the Spence shelter where the teen was pulled out of his hammock last year? It's just a shame that just because a human and a bear have an encounter (and most likely always error on the human side) the bear suffers the consequence. Should trump up the charges and fines breaking park rules and maybe that would help some. But maybe not. Have a great weekend ya'll! Five more days and I will be in the park! :)

Two days without a post. Is it possible the bears are holding the crew hostage. They haven't made any demands yet. Just kidding !!
