Morning Ambiance

10/28/2013

Picture
Breakfast by lamp light. It is a bit dark at the moment. The clouds have settled into to all of the nooks and crannies. The guests will drink their tang to the soft glow of the oil lamp. It is a bit chilly this morning, but a heat wave in comparison to the last few days. The low was only 32º with a high of 46º. It is currently misting and looks as though we will not be getting a visit from our friend, Mr. Sunshine.
I believe it was this day last season that started the blizzard of 2012. By the time the storm stopped we had over 35" of snow. I think I will stick with rain for now.

Any morning spent by lantern light is a good morning

I remember that day, took us 14 hours to get up. Trails so bad had to spend and extra night. Everyone was so good to us , even came out to find us in the dark. What a great bunch of people. Was the best experience of our lives. I would do it again, miss not hiking up this year. Hopefully can make it next year.

With sunrise and breakfast being served at about the same time at this point in the season, I am curious as to if guests have to make a choice between one and the other. We have reservations for Oct 20th next year and I would hate to miss out on either. We have been coming up in August which gives us enough time to leasurely enjoy the sunrise on Myrtle Point and still get back for the world famous LeConte Lodge start to the morning.

Cozy images of the dining room by lamp light are always so inviting.

We are coming up Halloween. We attempted last Halloween but then encountered all the snow. The forecast this year is 65 mph winds and rain. That sounds pretty spooky to me. See you soon!

It will be lighter next week at this time with the time change. Which I don't much care for. Love the photo. Need to call in and pay for my reservation for next year.

We just got home after a long weekend in SMNP, hiked up boulevard on the 25th, very chilly, our water froze up as well as our food, followed bobcat tracks most of the way up, the snow and whore frost along with the cleat blue sky with the fall colors down below was breathtaking....came down alum cave.

we feel blessed to have been witness to such a beautiful hike up the mountain.

Did you take any pictures of the bobcat tracks? There have been several reports, but no credible evidence. It would be very handy if someone took a picture of it with a quarter just to the side for reference and another picture that captures spacing between tracks.

Bobcats have been spotted by many hikers including our group on numerous occasions over the years. It isn't that rare if you talk with some hiker groups that have several 900 milers in the group.

What time did you start on Friday? The trails were snow covered I heard. I heard that 441 was closed on the Tenn. side because of Ice and traffic was at a stand still and backed up for miles.Glad you had a great hike.

Cold ? Add a layer; Rain ? A rainsuit is ALWAYS the first item to pack; Snow ? Let it snow; Adapt to it; improvise; be creative; Embrace it completely; It's just the weather ! My knee hurts like heck, but next week (Wednesday) I'm hiking up the mountain along Bullhead {anyone wants to go along I'm hitting the trail around 6:30am} than back down Trillium - - parking arrangements and shuttle service already in place; Let it rain or let it snow ! I may not hike fast, afterall my nickname is "fi-yoh-pi-poh", Cherokee for "Slowwalker", but I'll get there and have a great time of it; Remember: "No matter where you go, there you are !" G'day.

Hiking up on Saturday. Will the rain down in Gatlinburg on Friday turn to snow up on Leconte?

My son and I were one of the few that hiked in that blizzard, it was awesome, Something I would never have gotten to experience. We all stayed the extra day except one couple. The crew always makes the stay a pleasant one, they rock!

Sorry Tom no pics, but also saw some bobcat scat in one spot along with some bear scat that was 100% mountain ash berries.

Jackie...we left newfound parking lot at 7:15, 441 was still open but had some very slick ice spots close to the top, we were surprised when we heard some folks talking about 441 being closed, we dropped my small motorcycle at alum cave parking lot and rode it back up top to get the car, they had spread some rock chips on the ice by then, I was a bit worried about ridding the bike on the ice

The atmosphere of the dimly lit dining hall is truly a favorite of mine.

I forgot to add we did not stay, it was just a hike up boulevard ...a very quick lunch, and a stumble, trip, and slide back down alum, yes we went past our limits for a single day hike and our legs were letting us know that.
