Morning At the Lodge

3/27/2014

Looking down into the valley at dawn.
" Snow provokes responses that reach right back to childhood"- Andy Goldsworthy

It never got above freezing yesterday, but the sun was out, and that made for a gorgeous afternoon on top of the mountain. The low yesterday was -1º with a high of 27º. The trails are going to be extremely icy. Make sure you have some sort of traction device for your shoes. The guests are making it up the mountain just fine. If you are hiking up over the next day or so, just start early and take your time. See you on the top.

Andy Goldsworthy! My favorite artist. If you have never seen his work look it up. Amazing art.

Allyson are you going to put up a photo of the new 2014 T-shirt design?

This morning's photo looks almost exactly like the one I always enjoy from the last cabin on the upper row, no. 9 I believe it is. It is said that the lights below are those in Pigeon Forge. A beautiful sight to behold regardless.

Brr..another cold day up top. But it sure looks pretty in the picture this morning. Noticed all the talk about kids on the mountain...Been up with all 5 of my grandkids..the youngest last September. It is nice to see the future hikers of LeConte when those of us who hike now are to old to make the trip. What an adventure for the next generation of LeConte lovers!

Somehow didn't realize Gatlinburg was that clear from the lodge.....Guess I wasn't looking for it..... ;-) ...... Love Your Pics n Descrips!.....Hope to hike up this year!

That would be Pigeon Forge, not Gatlinburg. You cant see Gatlinburg from the Lodge. Thats what Allyson told me when I asked

One of my favorite sights, looking down over Pigeon Forge at dawn! Awesome!

All the gaudy tourist traps of Pigeon Forge look quite lovely and mesmerizing from a peaceful mountain top. (I like to put a positive spin on something negative if at all possible.)

Is that Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg? It's quite a contrast seeing artificial lights against the stark beauty of the lodge in the snow. Nice shot!

That's Pigeon Forge. There are places where you can see Gatlinburg from LeConte, but my memory's failing at the moment as to where those are. Can anyone else step in and refresh my memory?

I remember standing over to the right a ways when up at the Cliff Tops observation spot and seeing a bit of Gatlinburg from that vantage point. All I could make out was the top of the "Space Needle" and few rooftops of surrounding buildings. Someone else may have more to add to this information.

Great picture! I understand the need to be connected at all times these days.....but.....I wish people would be more respectful of using phones all the the time while up top. It gets so loud on the porch with everyone yelling can you hear me now. Make a quick phone call then enjoy the quiet and beauty around you. Many make the climb to enjoy the solitude and to get away from the electronic drone.

Rebecca, I agree with you about cell phone usage at the Lodge. Enough is enough! I was hiking to Cliff Tops one day, and there was a lady nearby trying to use her phone, and she was complaining that she couldn't get reception. I said something like, well, you ARE on a mountain in the middle of the forest. Who was she calling anyway?? Surely her family knew she was hiking up. Couldn't she just talk to them the next day?

Ah! I have been reading a book about the smokies and just found out what LeConte Lodge is. I'm from Cincinnati, and I now have to get down there. We're doing a different part of the park next week, but I can't stop thinking about how awesome this place must be. Hopefully all the snow is gone by next week!

TQ -

I am from Northern KY and my brother is from Cincinnati. We go up to Mt. LeConte twice a year. Once you go up, you will understand what an awesome place it is. We have gone up/down all 5 trails. I suggest doing Alum Trail to the top if this is your first time. I feel Alum has the best views on clear days. If you stay at the lodge, make sure you go to Myrtle Point (sunrise) and Cliff Tops (sunset). On clear days/evenings the views wont disappoint.

I believe Gatlinburg can be seen from Clifftops. Can't wait to hike back up top this summer.

Gatlinburg can be seen in very few spots, sometimes from the right spot on Cliff Tops you can see the Burg. Would love to see the shirt design for this year if possible. The mountain itself blocks Gatlinburg almost entirely! Everyone have a great day and be nice!! <3

You can see a small portion of the south end of Gatlinburg from Cliff Top.

This was my first trip to the lodge. The staff the lodge and the scenery was all fabulous. I had such a great time and will be coming back. Met some really wonderful people there and was really fun to watch the sunset with a few of them. My name is Bud Smith and my cousin was Robby Davis. Thank you all it was a great 2 days!!!
