Motherly Love

One of the reasons I love this mountain is being able to enjoy the precious moments. I was heading to the bathroom this morning and saw a ruckus by the office. I looked up to see a fawn barreling around the building. He was testing out his legs. His mother was just sitting there watching him as if she was annoyed. I sat in awe as she let me witness the awesome display of a fawn learning his limits. She later gave him a "spit bath". This is not the type of "spit bath" my mom used to give me when we were camping. Mine involved a galvanized tub and a bucket of water. The crew was commenting on the fact that the deer seemed to vanish while the bear was in camp. It is amazing how nature gives these animals a sixth sense. As soon as the bear moved on, the deer were out and about.

We have 2 fawns here I watch every morn and evening. Never get tired of it. The fawns are like watching little kids ripping around at times.

I live pretty well out in the country away from London, KY on a little over 100 acres and we have a lot of wildlife, including almost nightly views of deer which is always nice; I enjoyed your description of the deer at the lodge and it appears that the fawn surely must have been born right there or very near; the mother deer's behavior is typical of that toward a newborn; regardless of exactly where the fawn was born, it's another great attribute of the lodge; nice to hear and see; I wonder how that bear is doing !? He's probably a good distance away by now !

My neice and I were there to see the mom and baby. They were beautiful. We also watched 4 more deer pass by our cabin in the morning. The hike was grueling, but we had a great time!

August 2, 2012 Curt Jolly and myself hiked Mt Leconte via Allum Cave trail for the first time. What an experience! Upon arrival, whe found the dining hall and were refreshed by the hot chocolate and lemonade. But was amazed when I saw chocolate oatmeal no bake cookies made by Allyson. Those are my all time favorite cookies and made our visit extra special. Thanks
