New Lawn Care Program

6/18/2014

Picture
It was a gorgeous day up top. Our little friend, the resident doe, decided Chris needed some help weed eating. I guess she took that in a literal sense. She visits us every afternoon to see where she can help out with lawn care. It was a great day up top to sit and watch deer eat grass. The high was 70º with a low of 55º. It is going to be hot over the next few days. Remember to drink plenty of water on the trail. I always carry at least 2 liters or more when hiking up the mountain. I usually drink it all.

I am sure a lot of you have heard that Bullhead trail is closed due to bear activity. We are not sure where the bear was spotted. We are also not sure of any details. As for now, you can hike any of the other trails with no problems.

Allyson I saw the Bear alerts on a Facebook post yesterday. How & when are Bear alerts issued and how is it determined when it's "safe" to travel in those closed areas?

Most bear alerts are put in place by the park service when someone reports a problem, i just reported one last week! on the AT and reported it at Clingmans Dome, to the Forest Service
, filled out paperwork , then they decide when to remove the threat! also be aware of spiders we had to take a friend to er for brown recluse bite, he is doing okay after having a large part of the skin on back of his hand removed, so be careful!

James, where was your friend when the brown recluse bit him?? That's awful!

James

Anna i think we were around Birch Springs campsite number 113, hiking on AT also a bear stayed in our camp fro about two hours! he thinks it bit him when he ran his hand through the hiking pole strap!

Wow, James, that was horrible luck for him! The Park website states Bullhead trail is closed due to "Aggressive bear behavior", but it's also listed as closed on the "Where bears are active" list as well. I'm glad you didn't "make it on the News" that week!

I also heard someone shot at a bear on Bullhead and they weren't sure if it was hit, injured or dead, so they closed the trail to avoid encounters with an angry injured bear. :-(

I sure would like to know more details of this unfortunate story as they come out. Did someone witness the shooting? Do the rangers have any idea about the motive? Very strange, and very anger-provoking..

So sad to hear, I hope the rumour is wrong

On our way down from lodge on the 18th, we witnessed a gentleman with a holstered handgun. It's sad to see guns in the park. If your that worried, stay home.

My son hiked up Rainbow Falls yesterday. On the way back down he didn't realize Bullhead was closed and took it. They did catch a glimpse of a bear but just kept going and the bear paid them no attention. At the trailhead he said there was a big sign stating closed due to bear activity.

Davy Crockett just "grinned down" any bear he came across.

Larry P., as someone who bushwhacks a lot, I see fewer bears, snakes, or other wildlife than someone on a trail and maybe someone driving around Cades Cove. The reason? We bushwhackers make too much noise thrashing through the rhodo, climbing through blowdowns, and yelling to others in the group that we've found a better way to go! :)

well said Jenny, well said.

OK....this explains the crunching and munching sounds we heard overnight in Lodge #3, a couple of nights ago. I was not willing to go out and investigate!

Excellent advice about water and food. Here is a list of the "Ten Essentials" that I learned many, many years ago:
1. Water
2. Food
3. "Space" blanket. For emergency shelter and keeping shock victims stable.
4. First aid kit. Include your own personal pharmacopeia.
5. Protection from sun and cold: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses.
6. Navigation: map and compass.
7. Light: flashlight, headlamp, spare batteries.
8. Spare clothing for warmth in case you have to overnight it.
9. Matches or other firestarters. FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY!!
10. Knife. 1000 uses for this.

Thanks for your posts, and I'll see you in August!
Cheers,
John
