The fog is burning off and there are patches of blue sky above. Today has the makings of a splendid day on the mountain. The crew is getting camp ready for our next wave of guests to arrive. I am sure the day hikers will start trickling in before to long. Hopefully there will be a little "me" time today. I am itching to get out of camp and explore my back yard.
The rain held off for a while yesterday. The llama wrangler was able to get a couple of new guys up the mountain. We have retired a few of our old timers and put them out to roam the pastures and enjoy their retirement years. There will be some new faces on our llama teams. I think I will wait to learn their names once they have a few trips under their reigns.

Good show on the rock wall, Chris! Either you have a little Inca blood in your veins or its just your close association with the Llamas over the past 10 years.

Nice job on the wall - got a couple at my house that could use your handiwork!! Wall looks great Chris!! I think those llama's are just like the sled dogs I take care of in the summer. It comes a time they have to retire. Some will go until they fall down and others just stop. Get attatched to them all and each one has their own personality. Gotta love them!!

I'm seeing a good bit of green grass show in your photos. This will probably be a stupid question, but does the grass get thick enough up on the mountain to require being mowed in the summer? Y'all can go ahead and laugh now.

Regarding the llamas, I was wondering if "Sparky" has retired ? I hiked up with him in 2004; groundskeeping at the lodge must surely consume a good deal of time; In my back yard I have a large limestone rock that looks exactly like "Shamu" the killer whale at Seaworld which weighs ~1K lb; It's a great conversation piece, and I'd donate it to the lodge, but, of course, it'd be far out of place ! Maybe Seaworld would want it ! For me, the rock walls up there give quite a comfortable atmosphere; I, too, truly appreciate your photos and comments as I doubt I'll get up there this year due to knee surgeries; but next year I'll be ready to return, and frequently. thanks.

We retired Sparky last year. I was sad to see him leave the team. He is my favorite llama out of all them.

Chris, I am impressed with your rock wall and you did it so quickly. It's quite an art to get the right rock for each spot. Very impressive.

Nice work Chris! If this lodge management thing doesn't work out you might have a future as a stone mason - LOL!

I know there are lots of rocks on LeConte, but my question is whether Chris collected all of the rocks used in the wall and carried them to the wall site or were the stones obtained in some other manner? Just curious.

The stones were from the previous wall. We did have some stones flown in about 6 years ago when we were doing work around camp. He used some left over stones to fill in some of the gaps. Comments are closed.
