Nice Chill In The Air

8/19/2011

Picture
The cone flowers are starting to die off and the snake root is coming alive. Chrissy checked on the blackberries yesterday. They are still a couple of weeks away from prime picking. The temperatures are still in the 60's during the day and low 50's to upper 40's at night. There is a definite chill in the air. Fall is just around the corner. I have been asked about the fall colors on the mountain. We don't see as much color change up top. The places you are going to experience it is while hiking up. You will usually start seeing color changes half way down the mountain in early October. The peak color depends on the weather. Most of the time it is the later part of October. I have seen it as late as early November. These are the best estimates I can give you.

In case no one ever comments, I wanted to let you know that I look forward to each and every day when you post photos and reports about what goes on up there. I have hiked it twice and that was many years ago. Your daily reports and photos keep me inspired to visit again as soon as I can make the trip. Thanks!

Have hiked up a couple of times via Alum cave. Planning a hike Labor Day weekend. Thinking about Rainbow up and Alum down. Any suggestions?

I just had to add to Jenny's comments, although she said it as good as I could have ! I've hiked it several times, and even more throughout the years passing by the lodge coming along the Boulevard going back to Alum; The daily posts are my daily "refreshers"; I appreciate them tremendously. thanks.

I have only been to the lodge once. Will be coming back again next spring. And yes, the pictures keep the feeling of the mountain alive until I can return. Have to stay at least 2 nights to enjoy the peace & quiet of the mountain.

We just returned to Indiana last night after being at the lodge Mon-Wed. What an amazing trip! We want to say a huge THANK YOU to all the staff for being so wonderful! You guys made our stay on the mountain everything we could have hoped for! Great job! And we are so thankful for the opportunity to have the experience! This was our first trip up, but we hope it won't be our last! Thanks so much!

Tony,

I might suggest that if you want to go up Rainbow you might consider coming down Bullhead. They use the same parking area. Alum will put you on the other side of the mountain. I did Rainbow and Bullhead last week. About 4 hours up Rainbow to the lodge and about 3.5 hours down Bullhead. Views from Bullhead are great! Rainbow will run into Bullhead about .5 miles below the lodge. I like to go on to the lodge so I can refill my water bottle and say hello to the other hikers. It is about 14 miles round trip so start early, especially if you want to spend some rocking chair time at the lodge!

Thanks Bill.
Was planning on using a shuttle service between trails. Will look into Bullhead. Just really love the views on Alum.
