Not A Cloud In The Sky

5/6/2010

It was a great day to scout for bears. We have had an active bear on the mountain, so Chris and I decided we would go looking for it. The only thing we saw were some awesome views. Not a cloud in the sky and the temperature reached 66 degrees. I am wondering if this year will be  "the year" we hit 80 degrees on the mountain. That would be a record breaker. I personally hope we do not. I am rather used to the cool temperatures on the mountain.

Where was that photo taken? By the shadows. it was close to noon, but the flat open space is different. Perhaps the trail from High Top to Cliff Tops? I just don't recall much flat and open. This year I'll do a lot more walking around at the top to see what's there!

Good eye Tom. This photo was taken around 1 pm. This view is from "the Gap". This is between the shelter and the trail that side trail that goes up to Cliff Tops.

My husband & I came face to face with a bear on our way up Rainbow a couple of years ago. Thankfully he decided we could have the trail and went down the mountain. I was just wondering what signs y'all have experienced and where this one has been active. . .Also, how often do you have an active one up top? I know when we were there, one had been seen around the LeConte Shelter.

I, too, wondered for a minute about where that photo was taken, but I remember the place now; My engineering work takes me out into the mountains a lot here in eastern KY, and a week ago I encountered a male black bear with a rather mean disposition; he reared up on his hind legs to intimidate me, but backed away when I yelled back at him; have seen many bears over my years in the Smokies, but never one with such "manners" !! I'm really anticipating my return to the lodge in July; Have a good weekend folks !

Hey Doug...eastern KY here too. We encountered a bear at the Breaks a few months back. He wasn't like most of the Smokies bears we have encountered over the years either!

I'm starting to have some serious Leconte withdrawal...haven't been up the mountain since March 2009. We try to head to the Smokies at least 3-4 times a year, and hike to LeConte at least one of those times. Haven't been this year yet...hopefully will remedy that in a few weeks!

Thanks, Allyson for the posts and pics :)

Love the picture. Thanks again for the blogs and photos. Bear scouting sounds so exciting. You guys must have one of the most awesome jobs there is! Have you ever had a bad experience with a bear? What are the most active times of the year for the bears? Have a great day on that beautiful mountain.

I'm with you, Alyson. I hope it never hits 80 up on the mountain. There is something neat and magical in telling folks, "It's never been 80 up there." However, sadly to say, if it has already hit 66 in early May, the record may indeed fall-----hope not though.
