We walk on molten lava on which the claw of a fly or the fall of a hair makes its impression, whch being received, the mass hardens to flint and retains every impression forever more. Emerson
Morning y'all,

It's a beautiful, clear morning up top. The high yesterday reached 42 degrees. The overnight low was 36 degrees. It was 36 degrees and clear at 7am observation. The mountain received no new precipitation yesterday. The trails are in great shape and the air quality up top is good. Get out and enjoy the holiday weekend! It is best spent making memories outside with loved ones.

I spent the majority of the day yesterday resting up and doing a whole lot of nothing. After all this travel and moving about, I picked up a little throat bug. I'll be resting around camp, drinking tea and getting situated until this clears up. I still have to unpack all my books and settle into my cabin, so that'll take the lion's share of my attention over the next few days. Enjoy the trails for me!

Know it's great to be back on the mountain. Look forward to your posts and pics from up-top this winter. Riddance of that throat bug and savor the unpack & settle-in. Bask in the beauty, breathe in the peace & solitude, and ..."Cover less ground more slowly." - Thomas Merton

JP.. How do you get supplies without the Lamas coming up? I look forward to your posts this winter. Thanks.

There's a group of volunteers that get together once a week and line themselves at equal distances apart from one another then they pass bundles of supplies and goodies hand-to-hand in a long chain of people in a sort of "bucket brigade" until all the items get to the Lodge. It's quite an event; you should join them some time.

James,

There's quite a stockpile of dry goods at the lodge. After my first week, I figure out what I'm lacking - it's typically fresh goods like whole milk yogurt, kale, sweet potatoes, good coffee, etc. I thenhead to the valley once a week to check mail and pick up a few groceries to pack up!

Great to see your posts again and as with all the others welcome back. I hope you have a great winter tracking the bob cats and other wild life up there. I am hoping that 2017 will be the year I can finally get a winter hike in up to the lodge, I have never done any of the trails when all the leaves were down.

Welcome back, JP. I think I actually prefer your journals to those when the Lodge is open. I get that sense of solitude and peacefulness from you of the mountain that I don't get from the Crew when it is open, since, obviously, the crew are busy as bees. Thanks for letting me, us, live vicariously thru you this mountain winter.

Welcome back JP! I know how you seem to love the bobcats and bobkittens up there, so I just had to tell you this. My husband was up on top of the "mountain"....a hill compared to the Smokies....out at my family's farmstead last Saturday and he saw something rolling around up ahead of him on the ground. A ball of fur, he said. To his surprise it was four baby bobcats all rolling around playing. He said when they were finished they just all walked off into the woods together. So cute! No picture of course. I hope you have a delightful winter season complete with many snowflakes!
