Morning y'all,

It's a gorgeous, brisk morning up top. The high yesterday reached 9 degrees. The overnight low was negative 2 degrees. It was negative 1 degree and clear at 7am observation. There is still about eight inches of snow left up top. It is sure to be a cold one on the trails today, so be prepared for negative windchills. Check out the road status on the Park Service's twitter feed. I've gotta hit the trails, it is too beautiful to be behind a screen today. Enjoy!

Pam, did you happen to go to the Hocking Hills Winter Hilke this past weekend? First time I made it and it was great, although crowded. Beautiful frozen wonderland.

I believe the shelter may still be closed because of bear issues. Be sure to check the current status.

The view from the webcam at The Highlands Condo from yesterday is the view my wife and I enjoy when we visit the mountains. We have a friend who owns a unit and we usually stay there. Very nice to sit on balcony and watch sunrise with a cup of coffee. On a clear day you can barely see tower at Clingmans Dome. Hopefully we can visit this spring. Great pics as usual JP.

LOVE this photo! I am a happy camper today as well. Went to roaring forks this AM hoping it had opened. NO LUCK, so I travelled into the park and found them opening 441. WHAT TIMING! I headed into the park at 10 AM and was the first to arrive at Alum Cave. A gentleman pulled in right behind me (and he was headed to the top to take a picture of your lodge thermometer!!!! expect company today). On the trail, someone had already come DOWN the trail, but mine were the first footprints going UP! I was beside myself hiking in the snow and using my Microspikes for the first time. I made it to the cave before my turn around time, and had a great little hike. I passed several others going to the cave but I think only the one gentleman was headed your way! Wish I had more time, I would have joined him!! Have a great weekend up there.....the trail was BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Hi Elisabeth: As I enjoyed your tantalizing account yesterday of the old Sugarlands trail, I likewise enjoyed your description of hiking Alum; thanks
