Good news...we've got rain! And lots of it. Over the last two days we have received over 2" of steady rainfall, so much yesterday that my internet connection would not connect. Today is shaping up to be much like the past few, cool and rainy. Yesterday's high was only 54 and the low overnight was 46. Right now it is raining and 52 degrees. Y'all stay warm and dry out there!

Lots more rain on the way. Would not try to cross the streams on Rainbow trail the next few day. Cancelled my trip to Rocky Top this weekend. Thanks for your updates from the top of Mt. Leconte.

Disappointed in not getting through to make reservations for next year. I'm retired and I started calling at 8am and hit redial until noon then again at 1 until 5pm. Never got through must not have enough phone lines or people to answer phones maybe next year.

We have reservations for next Tuesday night and I'm concerned about trail and stream conditions. We're from out of state and not familiar with the area. I also can't get through to talk to anyone so I'm not sure how to get information.

I put in a reservation request for 2016. Should I assume our dates were not available if I haven't heard? I know it must be a big project to go thru all the requests. Maybe it needs a few more days?

Tanya

Have you tried calling the office to make reservations?

We have reservations tomorrow (Saturday night) so we'll be hiking up in the rain. Anyone have a trail recommendation with all of this rain?

I heard that some people get the same dates every year up at the Lodge because they are "grandfathered" in. Anyone know about that ?

Phillip: That is true. I have some strong opinions regarding this policy but refrain from commenting on them here, but I just did so on my own site (click on arrow by my name). I think that Marilyn commented correctly on the termination of this grandfathering policy. G'day.

Phillip & Doug Y, there is is an existing policy of grandfathered recurring reservations. The lodge stopped accepting new reservations of this type in 1998, and the park allowed them 20 years to phase them out. There are very strict rules on what one has to do to maintain the recurring reservation, and after 2018 they will be done away with entirely. From a recent conversation with a crew member during a dayhike, I was told that there are a few days throughout the season where these grandfathered reservations are for the majority or even the whole lodge, but typically is between 0-3 of the ~10-15 reservations per night.

We are thinking the Trillium trail tomarrow instead of AC.

The only place I would be worried about on the Trillium Gap trail is where the trail goes behind Grotto Falls. I heard (but was not there to confirm first hand) previously after a rainfall of a couple inches (within the last couple months) that the waster was past ankle deep as you pass behind. Considering that normally it is a couple feet below the path behind, that is a lot. That my not be much but the rains lately and predicted are going to be much greater the next few days according to the weather reports.

It is longer but there is the Bullhead trail (7.2 miles each way). It has a couple places where creeks go over the trail.

And there is Boulevard Trail (8.1 miles each way). I would travel this one but either way you are going to get wet! Try to make the most of it and enjoy the beauty of the hike and Mt. LeConte.

Yes, some people were grandfathered in back in 1998 when they made changes in reservations. This grandfather clause will end in 2018 and all of those people, myself included, will be put back in the general pool again starting in 2019.

I was one of the lucky ones grandfathered in but as the years passed and we brought fewer people our numbers dropped to 4. As luck would have it, age caught up with us before 2019. It only made sense to end the policy to allow new folks to enjoy the mountain. Will miss it always and live for the daily postings.

After writing on my own site about the "grandfathering" policy I wasn't too interested in attempting to get a call through to the office because of all the traffic doing the same, but something made me pick up my telephone and give it a try. I got four consecutive nights in late October next year. So, it comes down to luck. Keep trying.
