Oh, The Things I've Seen

What a way to start my day. Sipping coffee next to my heater and watching the sun come up over High Top. I want these to be the images I think back on when I am older and reminiscing about my days on Mt. LeConte. People ask me all the time, "What is the craziest thing you have witnessed while being at the lodge?" It is so hard to pin point. Unfortunately, a lot of the tales involve folks not thinking things through. If you have been reading this blog for a while, you have noticed certain days I will mention safety issues while hiking. These posts are usually brought on by issues we have faced at the lodge. People, in general, don't think about the "what if's". I am all for being adventurous, but I like to do my research and think things through. You would be amazed at how many folks do not do this and we end up helping them out of tight spots. I like to think that it will be a learning situation for them.
We have seen all types of hikers on this mountain from Roman soldiers dressed in the full attire, to big foot, and a lady who hiked in platform sandals. I had a crew member hike Trillium trail at night dressed in a coffee sack he had brought back from Africa. There are some other stories I don't think need to be repeated. We have seen a lot over the past twelve years and I know our General Manager, Tim Line, has seen even more over his 30 plus years at the lodge.

Like I said at the beginning, it is a beautiful day up top. The high yesterday was 61º with a low of 44º. It is going to be a perfect weekend for hiking. Come on up and see us.

One of my favorite stories was from someone's post on here right after Sandy dumped all the snow. Believe he was an expert competition hiker whom was the first up Alum and cleared the trail of falling trees with a battery powered saws all. There was much more to the story.

Heh! I remember that guy. His eloquent and braggadocios account of his adventure put me my mind of the J. Peterman character from Seinfeld.

I think i remember one guy, (don't know which snow), that had too leave his tripod, etc. in a snow bank in order to make it to the lodge, i think, and go gack the next day to retreve his gear....

I bet some of the unrepeatable stories are good ones too. Also, I am sure you've seen so much you can't even remember all the good stories over 12 years.

The unrepeatable stories are always the best! I think it is a challenge to write in code. Sort of like when you are talking when the kids are around. C'mon Allyson, give it a whirl! Would it help if I Double Dawg Dared ya! :)

just looked at the blog again - 3rd time today and it occurred we have not heard anything from Chris even second hand in a while. Looking at him in the picture of him with Allyson at the top of the blog made me wonder how he is doing. There was an blurb about his using the weed-eater last year. Anything this year?
