Oh, Those Hudson Bays

10/29/2013

Picture
With the cold night temperatures, I thought I would share a picture of our cozy guest rooms. The thick Hudson Bay blankets accompanied by two more wool blankets will keep you nice and toasty when the outside temperature reaches 20º. Luckily, last nights low was only 34º with a high of 41º.
Chris and I spend a lot of time in antique stores when we are on days off. I always get a warm fuzzy feeling when I come across a Hudson Bay blanket that someone is selling. I have been known to purchase one or two. The blankets are one of those iconic connections that most everyone, who has stayed at the Lodge, can identify with. From the best hot chocolate in the world, or the glass of Tang at breakfast, to the Hudson Bay blankets on the beds, there are Lodge traditions that will always be a part of your LeConte stories. That is what makes this place so special to so many people.

Hey that's my lodge room, I think. Is it the 3 bedroom on the left walking to the dining hall? If so, I have been in that one twice. Not sure what Mark has me in for November. We shall see.

Spent my honeymoon here, OCT 31 NOV1 1976, the only (and last guest of the year). I think the Lodge officially clsoed NOV 1. Weather was clear and cold, great sunset and sunrise views. Had a wonderful breakfast in the kitchen with crew. the Hudson Bay blankets bring back memories...cabin looks just the way it did then.. good times

Hiked up on Monday Oct 28. We did a day hike. Met up with the llama wrangler Alan. He went to high school back in the 70's with me and one of the guys that hiked up with me. We had a great lunch with Alan, met the llamas, hiked up to Cliff Tops. What a great view, and a wonderful day!

The picture yesterday and the one today bring back Smokey Mountain memories from when I was a kid and my family had a cabin just out the park boundary at the old Methodist assembly grounds, No electricity and outside latrine. Kerosene lamps and kerosene stove; also big wooden icebox, Bunk beds with double bed mattresses and of course heated by the big stone fireplace. That picture in my mind of that cabin's cozy atmosphere is so very like the two pictures from LeConte Lodge.
That memory is such a good one that I now collect kerosene lamps (have around 30) and have them displayed all around my home. Sure is nice to have light when the electricity goes out. That cozy cabin feel has also heavily influenced my home's décor.
Thanks for those two warm and inviting pics. Love the views and sunsets and snow and llamas and well lets admit it all the Pictures!!! Looking forward to the calendar when you are able to get it going for 2015.

When we were there in June, between the temps being in the 60s at night and the heat from the lamp, I didn't really get to enjoy the blankets! Oh well, I guess I'll just have to go again!!

After mowing my enormous yard for hopefully the last time today I came in to read what was here on the blog site; very heartwarming to see the photo of the cabin with those great blankets ! I acquired two of them about a year or so ago and use them during the winter often; after looking at the cabin photo for today I believe I'll get up into the woods behind my house and cut some small limbs/logs and build myself a bed like the ones in the cabins; it'll take a wee bit of sanding and varnishing, etc., but when done I'll put the bed out in my "man cave" and I'll almost have a cabin identical to one at the lodge ! Next week I'll have to call the office a day or two before my hike up Bullhead on Wednesday morning - - might get lucky with a cancellation, but if not, it'll be on down Trillium for a very nice hike for a day ! G'day.

Looking forward to our upcoming trip in November with our friends! My husband made many trips here before he talked me into going.
This will be my second trip and hopefully many more. Made many new friendships here and enjoy coming back to see those friends again year after year. November 19 & 20 will soon be here! Hats off to all the staff that work so hard to make sure everyone enjoys their stay.

No kiddies come to my house for Halloween candy. Live too far out in the woods. And now my kids are too old to trick or treat. So maybe this is what I'm suppose to do for Halloween. Take a hike up the mountain. Not a bad idea. Have a great time Wes.

Stayed Monday night and slept under those warm blankets, got up, hiked out to Myrtles Point just in time to see a brief beautiful peek of the sunrise ... We were the only ones out there, got back just in time for breakfast. We loved our stay and wish we had stayed 2 nights instead of one...Thank you.
