What a treat we had this morning. After a day of clouds and rain, the sunrise was a splendid surprise. English Mountain was showing off down in the valley and the clouds were painted in pinks and oranges. Who needs coffee when you get a vision like that? Ok, I realize I just went to far. That is just silly to think I could go without my coffee. Anyway, the thought of hiking down for days off will energize me as well. I am heading off the mountain for a week. Nathan will be here the entire time to spin some tales for you. I will be heading to the office on Monday to help with the annual reservation show down. Before you get to excited, don't send me your requests, I am simply stuffing envelopes. You will have to call are send a reservation request form which is on our LeConte Lodge site. I wish you all luck and I hope everyone gets the reservation they desire.
Now, for the weather. The high yesterday was 52 with a cold, cold low of 33. The clear skies brought the temperatures down. I guess it is time to make some hot chocolate to help our guests warm up this morning. Don't forget to get a good nights sleep. You will need your energy for getting your 2013 reservation starting at 8 am in the morning.

Phone is charged up, ready to dial "come Monday". Prepared to spend the whole day on the phone. Good luck to all! The 1st time I stayed there and got in was 2009 with 415 calls I almost hung up and then it rang instead of getting a busy single. The years following I always put a date down and just hoped for the luck of the draw. This past Aug. I did get the luck of the draw. This coming year I put in for July 4th with winning that would be like winning a million bucks if I get the letter. Will duct tape my fingers together so I don't call. With my daughters wedding next Aug. really should save my penny's. But, who can pass up the 4th of July on the mountain looking down at the fireworks. Have fun stuffing those envelopes, going to busy day for you all.

Monday morning; raining here in central KY; breakfast time at the lodge; the reservations office is the focus of activity; I'd love to be up there this very moment ! I've told many people about the lodge, what a great place it is, and how much I love it, and I was recently asked just what it is that makes the place so appealing; It's not so much the place as the attitude--every place in the Park is wonderful as long as you take the time to slow down and fully appreciate it with all your senses; But one cannot overlook the crew at the lodge, for with their positive attitudes and obvious enjoyment of working in that marvelous place, it simply increases the quality it possesses, and for some, a magical atmosphere; Have a great day up there, and a great week !!

Too bad they do not have a live calendar for each cabin so you can see what is booked and what isn't. Not to mention, I'd pay more not having to spend all morning on the phone :) 345 attempts and counting

I'm like a zombie sitting here dialing this phone. I don't need to look at my phone anymore to hit the correct numbers . I'm going to need to restrain my fingers after I get done, I'm sure they are going to keep moving without control as if i was still dialing the phone for about the next 2 weeks.

we climbed that trail several weeks ago and left the parking lot about 7:20 am... just turning light and the llamas had left around 6:30 am...the wrangler said he saw us pull in the lot just as he was leaving...we sat and waited for daylight and glad we did as he said there was a bear close by as he headed up the trail !!!

The Park is instituting an on-line reservation system in January that is supposed to make it easier to get a backcountry permit. People complained about how hard it was to get through on the phone. I never had to call anywhere near the number of times you folks did to get a backcountry permit. It seems to me that if it is that hard to get through the park should make the concessionaires put in a better system. What is good for the goose! But be careful what you wish for as the new backcountry system comes with a charge to sleep on the ground.

That is not a reservation, it is a lottery style drawing. If you have not spoken to someone or received an email confirmation you do not have a date reserved.
