Our Glorious Mountain

I thought I would share a different perspective this morning. I received a text yesterday afternoon from my cousin's wife. They said they would be flying around Mt. Leconte in 15 minutes. I went out on the back porch and saw them. I waved, but something tells me they could not see me. My cousin sent me this picture last night. I thought it was such a cool perspective I asked him if I could share it with you all. It was a gorgeous day to be in the air or on the mountain.

The sun warmed us a bit. The high was 44º with a low of 35º. The fall weather has been perfect. Folks have been asking about the vegetation. We don't have much vegetation that changes on the top of the mountain. Most of the flowers have gone to seed and the fir trees are the same year round. We have Mountain Ash trees that produce berries every three or four years. This is an off year for them, so we are missing the brilliant reds they add to the mountain top. It is getting to that time of year when we can take a stroll out to the Myrtle Point and see the patchwork of color in the lower elevations.

that is beautiful. Is that the lodge site? I have reservations with my sister in August, 2015. Am so very excited.

Great shot! How about a tour? I'm guessing that north is generally down and right in the photo. The reflection away up left must be the water tank near the shelter. Where does the helicopter land for a medical emergency? It looks like there is a bit of a clearing generally NE down Trillium and another closer in to the NW. Are there any photos of these spaces already posted?
In the "I know nothing" dept I thought GSMNP was restricted airspace and that a flyover like this. . .problematic.

Excellent view indeed of the lodge. It puts the lodge and its location in a very good perspective. Driving by Sevierville and approaching Pigeon Forge this past April I was lucky enough to spot the lodge from the highway as I drove and confirmed this after I pulled over and used my binoculars to look again. There was no mistaking that it was the lodge I was looking at and only because the sun was exactly at the right angle to highlight the snow / frost on the roofs of some of the lodge structures. It was pleasing to have been able to get this view from "down below". I, too, was wondering about the airspace directly over the Park property being restricted. I have no knowledge about that. Looks like I'll have to wait until next April to return there. g'day

That is a great picture from a new perspective. I've been to the lodge and seen pictures, but its much bigger than I'd imagined it from the overhead picture.

Just got my reservations in the mail for next year! Woohoo! And I was reading rates sheet when I saw a bottomless glass of wine during dinner hour...is there a record for most wine consumed? Just curious, not that I would dare test it having to hike the next day lol

I am not interested in records, but during my first visit to the lodge in 2004 I became aware of their bottomless glass of wine. I consumed nine glasses, but I'm not bragging about this. Two crew members had t help me to my cabin after dinner. Never again....
