Seventeen guests were able to make the trek and enjoy the mountain over night. We saw a few day hikers as well. I am sure they enjoyed the beautiful hike up. The leaves seem to be at their peak color from the Alum Cave parking lot to the bluffs. I would predict the lower elevations are going to start seeing the best colors in the next couple of weeks. The temperatures are are not too bad for this time of year. The high yesterday was 57º with a low of 42º. We are currently experiencing sporadic rain showers. It is looking like this weekend is going to be a great time to get out and play in the woods. Hope you will come up and see us.

Can I just say, I hope I never see my Smokies shut down again in my lifetime ! My family live for these mtns. We visited this past wknd. and while I like the Burg, without those mtns. it's just another tourist trap. On the lighter side, the drive across the mtn. via 441 was nice and a tip of the hat to park personnel for allowing some of the small quiet walkways to be used ;) Ran in to Chris and Alyson monday on a trail close to the Burg..Once again thank you for all the work you do up top !

A carpet path of leaves today. My screen saver of the day. 17 guest. Wow! Start you out slow and get back in tune with things I guess. I don't think we had a lot more than that July 4th in the down pours. Must've been a lot of more local people who could make it. Or when you said were open they jumped in their cars and came. Good for them, they were the lucky ones!

Debi, my son has now missed 3 hikes this year. May when he got sick, july 4th when it came a flood, and oct 13-15 on the AT. Hopefully nothing happens between now and Nov so we can make that trip, albeit without my dad now who fell off ladder tuesday and fractered his hip/pelvis. : (

Amazing photographs coming out of the Smokies right now. It makes me rethink my policy of not coming down in October because of the crowds, but I suspect I'll stick to early spring and September. (And perhaps May or June.)

I'm coming up to stay Wednesday night and I'm bringing my food editor wife, Ginna Parsons. My apologies on the front end when you see a strange woman noseying around the kitchen.

Alyson-just wanted to say thank-you for your post yesterday. This is my "Happy Place" when I am not in the mountains so it is always great to read happy and positive musings without the negatives throw in. We can get all of that on the news. Welcome Back!!

Am surprised you had 17 folks that could get here and hike up on short notice. I assume most who stay are not locals and it takes planning (unless you ARE a local and retired like me) to get here from afar in time to hike up. I can't see LeConte from my house, but do look up at Inadu and Old Black and Greenbrier Lead, colors are fabulous in the high country.

I came down last week. I had been planning the hike for months, but thanks to our government, things didn't happen the way I had planned. I spent three days in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge which was ok but not what I had wanted to be doing. Maybe next time. Comments are closed.
