Picture Perfect Day

In all of my time on the mountain, I have never known it to be cold, cloudy, icy, and snowing in the lower elevations and clear and beautiful at the top. Yesterday was the exception. Chrissy and Alan said they hiked out of the clouds about two miles below the lodge. We had a stellar day at the lodge. It was cold, the high was 28º and the low was 11º, but blue skies prevailed. We stayed in an inversion for the entire day. Chris took a hike to Cliff Tops to capture the stunning photograph above. We are gearing up for a busy weekend. I foresee a lot of hot chocolate being consumed. We are currently looking at 23º and sunny, clear skies. It is going to be a great day to be in the mountains.

What an awesome photo! I hiked up to Mt Leconte about 10 years ago---I hope to make it back up there before I get too old. I enjoy your posts about your daily work and hikes, and continue watching over the mountain.

This could be called the "Sea of Tranquility" or, many other beautiful names, but it is not mine to label. The fog presents, although temporary, a pleasant barrier to what lies below.

Beverly, "old" sometimes is a state of mind. Take the hike.

DougY, i am curious as to why you are curious about my MOS! 51 years ago i spent 2 1/2 years at Ft. Bragg, N.C. as a light vehicle driver and took airborne traning at the '82nd airborne school' and was able to get 23 jumps in that time spand. And no, i have not been to the lodge lately. But the two times i was on the mountain, i loved it!! Have a good day, Doug!

Norman, your enthusiasm for mentioning your military connections just made me a bit curious about it and simply wanted to learn if you and I had anything in common. If I offended you by asking I apologize. As for your visits to the lodge all I was seeking was another viewpoint about you sharing the experiences there. I enjoy reading every account regarding trips up there. I think that the vast majority of folks who go love it !

Kudos for an amazing pic. We experienced the inversion up on the Blue Ridge heading toward graveyard fields in October. Even more incredible when your there. All of your photographs would make an amazing coffee table book from your 12-years...

My first comment when I saw today's photo was "oh wow!", my first thought was "I wonder if that's what heaven looks like?". I have never experienced being on the upside of an inversion... and would love to see what that's like. I can only imagine. Thanks for the beautiful photo today!

Alum was cold and cloudy Friday AM coming up. but the frosted trees made an other-worldly wonderland. It was beautiful! Above the clouds the trail was awesome under clear blue skies. There was some ice on the trail but traction devices were optional if you watched your step. As the photo shows, sunset @ Clifftops was gorgeous over the cloud layer and the temperature was very tolerable because of the low winds. The hike down Alum on Saturday was almost spring-like with comfortable temperatures and beautifully clear skies although there were some slick-icy spots to watch out for. All in all, one of our best trips. Thank you all!

We stayed at the tricorner knob shelter on Friday night and it was cold!!! I was thinking around 5 degrees but you reported 11 so I'm guessing it was closer to that. Beautiful day and hike though.

We are such junkies! (Does anyone recall that term?) If we don't get our daily fix, we start getting twitchy. I'm in there with the worst of you!
Speculate:
a) Out on a rescue
b) Hardware/Software/Link issues
c) Wild card
Any other usual suspects when we miss a posting?
