No Lines for the Hammocks

4/21/2010

Not much of a line for the hammock today.
It is a balmy 30 degrees this morning. The wind is blowing and the fog has made itself at home. It rained yesterday with a  mix of sleet and snow. Luckily, it did not stick. The high yesterday was 36. The trails are all clear of ice and snow. Trillium Gap trail is open, but only from the Rainbow Falls Trailhead. You MUST  park at the Rainbow Fall trailhead parking lot and hike the connector trail to the Trillium trail. As of now, all of the trails are in good shape. You will not need ice walkers of any kind. I think I see a nap in my future, and I don't think it will be in the hammock today.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. . . that is all I can say about your daily posts and all of the comments that get posted in response. I'm from Mississippi and I LOVE the Smokies and hiking in them!!! I am way NOT as experienced a hiker as any of you!!! I learn something new everyday I read your blog. First thing I do EVERY morning is check the two GSMNP webcams to see what it looks like there & to see my mountains . . .and then I read your blog. My sister & I are primary care-givers for my elderly Mom who has dementia. High-on-LeConte, your blog and the pictures are not only a great way to keep up with the mountains I love but it is also a moment for mental vacation when a physical one of any length is not possible these days. I will be back up to see you one day, just don't know when that will be. Someone PLEASE just lay in that hammock at least a few minutes for me today!!!

After doing Boulevard in knee or waist high snow (& ice) with John Northrup's Dad once & his brother Bart another time, just about any other conditions seem good. I just sent this (in case you didn't know) that this is John's (LeConte Lodge Staff) Uncle from Michigan. Any photos of us loading/unloading the helicopter would be appreciated. Some of my "friends" don't believe the 60+ guy did that.

As always, Allyson, your photos each day make me feel like I'm still at the lodge; I wish I was ! As for the hammock, I never could get comfortable in one of those contraptions ! I was always rolling out onto my patootie !! G'Day.......
