Practice Safe Hiking

The clouds rolled in yesterday afternoon and made themselves at home. We awoke to heavy cloud coverage this morning. We did see short downpours throughout the afternoon. The high yesterday was 62º with a low of 44º. I was amazed at how busy the mountain was considering the dreary weather. I would like to remind everyone, it starts getting dark around 7. Please adjust your hiking times accordingly. Make sure you have flashlights with you in case you are later coming off the mountain than you had planned. We are seeing a lot of hikers arrive at the top around 6 and they are not prepared for hiking off in the dark. Please, turn around if you are not making good time and are not an experienced hiker. I know a lot of folks out there have no problem hiking at night, and that is fine. I am sure those folks carry flashlights. Carry snacks, water, flashlight, rain gear, and layers of clothing. It is about 20º colder at the top. Get on the trail early and give yourself plenty of time to get down. Happy hiking and see you on the top.

What are you expecting weather wise for Saturday 10/11/14? We are planning on walking up Sat morning, but didn't want to get caught in a thunderstorm while on the mountain. Thanks.

Looking at the sign, I can see I sat at that very table. Sure wish I was right now. Looks so cozy. Wall paper of the day, Thanks Allyson.

I am always telling people about Leconte Lodge. I guess I've told my friends all over the world about it. I hope some get to visit there some time. Right after my therapy today I was showing my "trainer" some links to the lodge and discovered that some photos from past years' pages had been removed and I didn't understand this, but it's not important. But I did come across one page where the coordinates had been posted for the lodge and if one uses, for one example, Google Earth and enters these coordinates you will "fly" right to the edge of the lodge grounds up on the mountain which is a nice view, etc. The aerial photo from few days ago was my favorite.

You always have to keep that head lamp with you. I keep mine in a shoulder pocket or hip belt pocket. Plus, I always try to have a head lamp packed with me no matter where I go because you never know when its gonna be dark.

Yes, you always wanted to keep a headlight in your pack - always! Of course, the last time I hiked up in August, I forgot to take it out of my backpacking pack and put in my day pack. Being August, there wasn't much chance I would have needed it. But still, the fact that I wasn't prepared for all contingencies made me feel...well, like a novice.

So, I punished myself by writing, "I will never again forget my headlamp" 1,000 times!

The only time you might not use a head lamp or flash light would be a bright full moon. Then you need it for those dark tree covered spots!

Question for the cook... Is the hot chocolate gluten free? bringing a granddaughter up and down Monday for her 1st trip. Has celiac and don't want to temp her. Too good to pass up if you know it's there.
