Wow, it feels great to be back on my favorite mountain top. The crew had a fun filled day of slipping and sliding up the mountain with packs that were way to heavy. The trail is in pretty good shape. There is a slide right above the bluffs that is a little tricky, but passable. As for ice and snow, the upper section on Alum is slick. The snow is hard packed and extremely icy. You will need some sort of traction device for your shoes if you are planning on a day hike this weekend. The high yesterday was 42 with a low of 38.
We are getting ready for the airlift. We hope to fly sometime on Tuesday, that is weather permitting. I apologize for starting the season off with out a photo. I had a glitch with a new memory card. I will figure out the issue and get some photos for you. I know you all enjoyed reading JP's eloquent way with words. He will be missed. We are hoping he decides to return for a third season as our winter caretaker. In the meantime, Nathan and I will do our best to keep you entertained.

Can a person climb up and back in one day, if they start very early? Since there is snow, is the trail marked well so newcomers don't have problems keeping on track?

Yes, all the trails are well defined, some are in better shape than others.

Kim-yes it can be hiked up and down in the same day, though how much time it takes varies a lot from person to person. If you get started at daylight, you should have plenty enough time now that the time has changed. Having the right equipment on the upper section makes a big difference in the amount of time it takes as well.

Yes, welcome back ! I'm sure everyone is eagerly anticipating hearing about your trip to Kilimanjaro. I, too, have a question or two, but, there's all season to hear about it. I hope your journey was a great one and rewarding. Tony Ga: Back in the seventies and a bit in the early eighties a couple of friends of mine and I camped and hiked some in the Fall Creek Falls area; very nice; did some rappelling there, too. I drove a tractor trailer for a big company for a year just for something different to do and three times hauled loads from the Jack Daniels distillery; I'd glad I was never a drinker, although I do like bourbon and whiskey on rare occasions, becasue while hauling a trailer full of J.D. I got rather thirsty ! I admit that the temptation to "sample my load" was fairly strong ! Luckily, for them I suppose, that trailer was locked and sealed ! Looking forward to hearing from all the crew; I was wondering if there are any new crew members ? G'day.

My dad (79) and I have climbed twelve fourteeners together. We did Pikes Peak last summer. We will see you on Tuesday. Someone said something about ICE? We don't have any snow gear for our shoes, but we have poles. Do you think it (snow gear for boots) is really necessary? We'll just go and see. If we have to turn back, we will.
