Well, so far we are out of the clouds. Chris and I watched the sunrise and prayed the clouds disperse instead of rise. The crew is banking on that "partly sunny" day the forecast was calling for. It has been pretty chilly at night. The low last night was 45º with a high yesterday of 62º. We received another .6" of rain.
This question is for you guests who have stayed the night and walked through the dining room during the crew's dinner. Do you ever wonder what we are discussing? Well, I thought I would share our discussion from last night and maybe you can help us solve the mystery. The world changing question was, "What was wrong with Dolly, from the Island of Misfit Toys?" She seemed normal. We could not determine how she was a misfit. I will let the discussion begin. I will add that I was happy to know our younger crew members did know about the Island of Misfit Toys. I found out earlier that most of them had not see The Waltons. One of them even said, "Oh, that is where the phrase "Goodnight Johnboy" came from." Now you know, during crew dinner, we delve into some really deep issues.

The A,T. hike through the Park is my favorite, in the "long" category at least, and it's 68-70 miles (depending on the shelters you stay in or side hikes, etc.); I've done the Davenport Gap to Newfound Gap half a couple of times - - a little over 31 miles; Brian: October should be a great time to do that hike ! Managed to mow my enormous yard {I need a much smaller one !} between the rains yesterday. It's been a "different" summer to say the least ! Misfit toys ? I believe they're all stored here in my house ! If I hurry now, I might be able to make breakfast up on the mountain ! Well, that's a nice thought anyway. Good morning.

Brian, are you doing that over your son's fall break? We don't have fall break in the north, we just start school after Labor day and get out a little latter than you do down there. 2 more years and we can take break whenever we want. yeah!!!

ok, i cheated and went to the experts - wiki... 7/25/2013 12:58:20 am
I think Dolly had self-esteem issues. She believed herself to be a misfit, even though no one else could see it. I guess it's a reminder that sometimes people are 'broken' in ways that others don't see. And there ends my psychoanalysis of fictional characters! :-)

Didn't the doll have a bandaid on her head? I don't remember even though I have watched that a 1000 times. Now, the Waltons is what I grew up with. I love that show! When I see a front porch like theres I always say now that's a Waltons porch. And my kids say who? what?? I have a Waltons front porch. I always loved the way Grandpa and Grandma bickered all the time, but loved each other so much. Kind of reminds me of my inlaws and my own marriage. Loved the wholesome of it all. Don't find those shows on tv anymore. One more show I used to like and I can't remember the name but I called it the Green family show. Where they traveled around in a trailer and the mom home schooled the kids and they found work where ever they could. Now, that was a good show. Medicine woman was also another. Ohh, gees I could go on, but I won't. But the Walton's is a classic, everyone should watch their Christmas show.

We've never been there for supper, but we have been there for lunch. I didn't wonder what y'all talked about. I DID wonder how y'all could eat those scrumptious looking chili dogs topped with huge piles of cheese in front of us while we had chicken salad and soup. Any other time, I would have been perfectly satisfied with chicken salad - but not when the crew is feasting on CHILI DOGS! :)

I am surprised with the age group of workers that they know who the Waltons are.

Just catching up on the last couple of days posts. Two great bits if information, one is the partially sunny week for the mountain, and the second and more important is JP's post that he is coming back this winter, YAY!! Wishing you all enough sunshine to recharge your internal batteries ;-)

Since the discussion is focusing around TV and everyone here presumably loves the Smokies, how many of you have seen the CBS TV series Christy (based on the novel of the same name by Catherine Marshall)? It aired in 1994-95 and there are only twenty-ish episodes, but it was oh, so wonderful!

Yes! Angela thanks for reminding me. Christy was one of my absolute favorites. If I remember correctly, the show or the movie, was filmed in or near Townsend.

Christy was filmed in/around Townsend, and each year in May they host a Christy Fest to celebrate the show. I understand that occasionally they get a cast member or two to participate.

Yes, Christy was filmed on some property on the outskirts of Townsend (you take a road right past River Rat as you start to go down Wears Valley Road). Comments are closed.
