Rain For The Mountain?

5/1/2013

Picture
Judging by the photo above, I think we might get a little rain this morning. There seems to be an ominous cloud sitting right on top of the mountain. The valley below is glowing in the sunlight. Talk about taunting us. Yesterday was a beautiful day. The high was 59º with a low of 40º. It is hard to believe it is already May. The grass is growing taller and the buds on the trees are showing. It is only a matter of time before the sand myrtle makes it debut.

Three weeks from today, we'll be waking up to that (maybe not the big grey cloud, but we'll take that if that is what the mountain is offering). Can't wait...

ahhhh...not wishing any rain on you guys today, but no matter...what a gorgeous photo!
It's mostly sunny here in north Florida but as usual it's a little steamy. One of these days I hope to move to the mountains and leave the sand behind.

Debnfl, yep we live in Michigan right on Lake Michigan (3 miles away) so I hear ya with the sand. That's why I go to the mountains. Not that I don't love my lake, but its a beautiful change of pace.

Time is drawing near for my journey to the place we all dream about. As vivid a picture as some of the regulars can project with their words or Allyson with her awesome pics. You really never truly understand the magic of this place until you have been there. Whether it be the often busy Alum trail or the solitude that Leconte offers via the bullhead or boulivard trail.Rain or snow. Sunshine or the misty fog, it WILL ALWAYS make you desire to return to see all the majesty that is MT LECONTE.. see y'all soon.

Looks like another rainy weekend will put our hike off another week. Might be up there on the same day as you Brian N bama.

We plan to day hike up and down Alum if weather permitting. If we get to go I'll look you up. I'll be the big ugly guy with the pretty girl.

The rain clouds always look more ominous to me when viewed from atop the mountain, but sudden rains and such are typical of the place. I had a refreshing hike of a couple of days and nights out a short distance on the A.T. and now regret that I didn't venture out the Boulevard Trail and visit the lodge. Kephart Prong was ablaze with flora, but that's an account for another time as I don't want to get too long here - - - I have eaten a lot at the Pancake Pantry on the main street of Gatlinburg and it's a nice restaurant. But I would like to try the Log Cabin Pancake House mentioned here a few days ago, but for the life of me I cannot recall which road is "Airport". So, can someone enlighten me as to exactly where this restaurant is located ? Perhaps a nearby landmark.....Good morning on May 2.

Doug, Airport road is the road that leads to the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, the trailheads for Bullhead, Rainbow Falls, and eventually Grotto Falls/Trillium. The Convention Center building is on it as is the Sidney James Hotel and the entrance into the Gatlinburg City park. I think it is the 2nd last traffic light before the park...can't recall the exact one (maybe #6) I'd look in my handy-dandy gatlinburg guide but I'm currently in Tampa visiting my daughter and don't have it nearby. As I recall St. Mary's catholic church is almost across from the Log House. Enjoy next time you're there...I'll be doing it a couple times when I go to the Smokies around May 28.
