Rain is Moving In

9/25/2013

Nathan figured out that we have had more nice days in September than all of June, July, and August put together. Does not surprise me. It was another beauty yesterday. The high was 66º with a low of 44º. The rain has moved in and we have already received almost a half of an inch over night. It is looking like it is going to be a wet day on the mountain.

The days are getting shorter and the nights colder. Make sure if you are day hiking up the mountain, you bring plenty of warm clothing and a good light source. It is always better to prepared and not need the items then to get caught off guard and not have the proper equipment to keep you safe. With that being said, Happy Hiking.

Hi Brian, I read you will be hiking up in November. I will be too have you ever hiked up in the snow and ice before? I have not and am curious any ideas on micro spikes? Or other necessary equipment or choice of trail due to possibly ice and winter. Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm going to jump in here--don't mean to get in the way of other comments from Brian or anyone else. November could be balmy or it could be icy, no way of telling this far ahead. In that transition month, what happens sometimes is that things freeze up overnight and then thaw over the course of the day if it's sunny. Or maybe not if it's overcast. Why not be on the safe side and carry traction devices? I agree on microspikes as the best. They don't weigh very much, so just stow them in the bottom of your pack, and you probably won't even need them. But they give you peace of mind. Easy to put on and take off. Have fun!

Dawn, sorry so late. I have hiked up in snow and twice in november. You will need some sort of traction device. Yaktrax are your cheapest out and work very well. We are going late november so good chance of snow then but who knows, Mt leconte weather is the most upredictable thing on earth. Allyson lives there and can't predict it. ALWAYS BE PREPARED !!!!!

I just had my first night at the Lodge and it was great. We came up Alum, a little tough but so beautiful! We came down today in the rain on Trillium and saw the Llamas, what a treat! I had a great time and can not to do it again.

10 women in the "happy hikers" from the John o'connor center in knoxville loved our hike up and back on alum cave. last night was a treat at the lodge, thanks to the amazing staff and Allyson's good food! Because it was a "bucket list" item for many of us, we will never forget these last two days. Thanks, you all!

Will be hiking up on 10/2 , which happens to be my birthday. I am so excited . Will be joined by 2 friends, one is a first timer. She is beyond excited. I sometimes think why do I want to continue to make this hike every year and then I remember how magical it is for me to reach the top and to see the cabins, the lodge.Love the smells on the mountain and love the sunsets from Cliff Top and the view from Myrtle Point. It is beyond a doubt one of my favorite things to do and I look so forward to next Wednesdayand bringing my friend, for her first time to Mt LeConte. Sure hoping this will be the first of many trips she will make to this wonderful mountain.
