Rain or Shine?

7/24/2013

We awoke to rain this morning and now the sun is teasing us. It will shine through the trees for a brief moment and then the clouds win over. There are thunderstorm warnings for today, so who knows what kind of weather we will get. We actually ended up with a nice day yesterday. There were a lot of day hikers taking advantage of the semi-dry day. I wish I was proficient in my Photoshop skills. I would add a canoe onto one of the trail pictures. After trying to run yesterday, it felt like I either needed to be in wet suit our a boat. The trails are a little soggy. We are still suggesting people steer clear of Rainbow Falls trail. We are due for rain for the next couple of weeks. We just don't know when the rain is coming and how much. It could cause for a problem with stream crossings. Any other trail is going to be fine. Have a safe hike and see you on the mountain.

It's been like this across the whole southeast. I don't remember the last time I looked out my office window and saw the sun shining in Tampa. We had more than triple our normal rainfall for June and we're about double for July already.

I was glad the rain had seemed to subside a bit during our visit last week, though the wet summer appears to have kept most visitors away as the Park and Maggie both were noticeably less crowded this July. Most of the storms seemed to steer clear of Maggie, and we had beautiful weather on our hike on Gregory Ridge Trail (my 4-month pregnant wife only made it to mile 4 before we had to turn around...) and the rain held off for us to get a hike out to Andrews Bald as well. We did get caught in a torrential thunderstorm last Wednesday evening in Cataloochee, but got some great pictures of the storms blowing through the park and swirling over LeConte.

Wish you guys could send some of that rain to us in Texas, we are in bad shape. Check your blog everyday and just envy you all for the rain, although I know it is not good for business in the Smokies. After being away from East Tenn for nearly 50 years I still miss the mtns.

I hear ya John, no rain in western Michigan either. My grass is dried right up and brown. Thought about investing in a sprinker system, but I'd rather spend it vacationing in Tennessee.

John, I could send you some from NE AL. I can't even get in the fields to mow. Debi,I think the vacation is a much better investment!! Did i tell you that my oldest and I are going to hike from davenport gap to newfound gap in october? Then we are taking my dad back up to the lodge on Nov. 21st for the night. ( I mean, that is only 2 days before my b'day)

Sounds like a great time Brian. Is that 72 miles? I just skimmed through some stuff on google and that's what I come up with. Good training for the AT

All the rain that east Tennesse and WNC have received is most unusual and, though I normally don't mind the rain, enough is enough. Flooding, trees uprooting, landslides and surely all this rain will have some affect on our fall colors. Had torrential rain coming down from Leconte, and not having good balance, I slipped and fell down much of the way. Last year, hot and dry. You just never know what normal is anymore.
