Rain, Rain, Go Away

4/28/2013

There is no way around the rain today. It is a dreary day on the mountain. I don't think these rocking chairs are going to get much use. If you are hiking up in this, please make sure you bring plenty of dry clothing to change into. You will get wet today. The high yesterday was 39º with a low of 34º. As you can tell by the temperature, it is very important to have some dry, warm clothing to put on when you get to the top. Please be safe out there if you are getting out in this

Very dreary down here in the valley to, I cant even see the mountains when I look up its so foggy and rainy. Looks like another day of staying in and quilting. All you hikers stay dry today.

Boy, not a good weekend if you were going to go to Gatlinburg. 50 here this morning and only 10% chance of rain. But looks like we could get dumped on any moment. Hopefully your rain up there doesn't start freezing.

Well, my wife didn't back out because of the rain yesterday and we really enjoyed our roundtrip to the lodge. The rain just made the sack lunch, coffee and hot chocolate taste that much better, and of course my wife had to load up on t-shirts and a pair of pajamas. She said she earned.it. Wishing everyone that spent the night last night and folks heading up today a safe if not dry trip.

Larry, what rain gear did you use...rain suit, poncho, umbrella, none? How did it work?

Tony, my wife wore a rain suit, I had a rain jacket and nylon hiking pants. We got a little damp but carried dry clothes. The only discomfort was cold hands due to our gloves getting soaked. On the way down we added cheap plastic ponchos and my wife wrapped her hands with plastic grocery bags. We stayed dry on the return trip. You mentioned umbrellas, we passed a couple on the way up using them, when they got to the top the were soaked.

Don"t mind the rain and don't mind the cold, but can't deal with the cold and rain together. Hopefully it won't be raining and cold next Saturday so we can get up there. Waterproof gloves...hadn't thought of that. Thanks and have a good day.

Eight of us hiked the Alum Cave Trail on Saturday the 27th - rainy and cold but what an adventure!
The hot chocolate was divine and the conversation around the heater was fun. The trip down was like hiking a shallow riverbed. Next time we will try to plan for better weather.
Mt. Leconte, I salute you... Been there, done that, got the tee shirt to prove it!
This will be a great memory.

It is a beautiful spring I don't see in 30 last years.

We climbed the Trillium Trail on the 28th in the rain in 4 1/2 hours. We were the only ones on that trail. By the time we reached the top, the trail had become a stream/river and the temperature had dropped. But we made it! Hurrah for our backpack-covering ponchos!
