Record Breaking AT Hike

7/29/2011

I know the link I am about to include is not about LeConte, but I have been following this woman for the past month and half. Her journey is about to come to an end. She is a strong athlete and an inspiration. Jennifer was scheduled to hike through the Smokies last Tuesday or Wednesday. I thought her blog would make for some great summer reading. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have. Click on the photo and it will take you to her blog.

Thanks for the blog link, I really really hope she makes her goal. In my book she has already set a trail record.

No doubt Jen is a superb athelete... but is this really a legit AT record? She doesn't carry 30 lbs of gear, sleeps in hotels, travels with a support crew, etc... I'm just saying as a three-time AT thru-hiker that the "record" is open to some discussion.

PS: I'm rooting for her to accomplish her personal goal.

I think the record is legit, but VS does raise a good question. Maybe they should sub-divide the record into speed hiking and traditional backpacking. Anybody know what the self-supported backpacking AT recoed is?

As an AT hiker myself I have to agree with VS. Jen's efforts are to be applauded highly, and her accomplishments are wonderful, and I certainly admire her. Her personal feat is not to be belittled. For me the true essence of the AT is to be out there experiencing what that trail was originally established for, lugging that backpack day after day in humbling solitude, taking in the seemingly endless sights along the route, and testing one's individual character, alone. In doing so you will discover all that you seek.

If the AT blog posts are current, sounds like she was headed through the Smokies today (Friday). Hope she avoids the lightning this time!

Allyson, thank you for the wonderful posts each day! Haven't made it up to the lodge yet, but that's one of my goals to get there one day. I know through hiking the AT is WAY out of my league!

Vibram Soul, puh-leeze. Didn't you as a "three time hiker" occasionally stay in a hotel? That's what their MO has been. Every so often they will come off the trail and clean up. Not day in and day out.

50+ mile a day average and folks come on here and talk down this record attempt? I've seen/heard it all.

Doesn't like a highnmighty socalled purist,

I disagree Scupper... Looks like she's got it pretty cush-- except for that 50 miles a day thing. No doubt she's fast on her feet. But what would a 30-35 pound pack do to her? What if she didn't have a support crew fixing her food and replenishing her water? What id she didn't have the opportunity to grab a shower, warm supper and soft bed each night? And I could go on with the 'what ifs'. For me though, the biggest question is 'what's your hurry'? The AT should be walked a pace that allows you to take in everything it has to offer, not just blazed through in record time. I'll gladly move over and let the speed demons come on through.

I forgot to mention clean, dry shoes to begin each day and a change at lunch time...

Glad you made it Jen. I'm not discounting your acheivement. Just feel like it belongs in a seperate category from AT thru-hiking.

LD,

All due respect here, but she achieved the fastest hike. Not backpack. She's done the pack thing. She's respectful of the solitude and the pace at which one backpacks the trail. I have no clue what y'alls point really is.....

okay guys Its an accomlishment anyone should be proud of! Do we do the Tour de France on one bicycle carry your own water, and fix your own flats!! whats next the first guy to do it in 46 days or the first african american! to do it in 46 days! in no way should this feat be belittled Some people do section hikes some do upper and come back ad do lower yrs later some skip sections and get shuttles and stay in hotels I wish i could do it!!
