Rich Colors of Autumn

10/20/2013

"Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn."- Elizabeth Lawrence

Autumn is hanging on in the lower elevations. It is slowly fading but there is still some beautiful color to be seen. We had a busy weekend on the mountain. A lot of folks made there way up to witness the fall color in all of its glory. The temperatures are starting to call old man winter's name. The high yesterday was 55º with cold 26º for the low. If there had been any precipitation in our forecast, we would have seen the first snow. Instead, we awake to the vision of our breath escaping through the frosty air. Time to make gallons of hot chocolate. I think we may be serving mass quantities this morning.

It seems that if I turn my attention away from observing the fall colors for any length of time, when I turn back to them they've changed rather quickly. Nonetheless, it's a marvelous time for the eyes ! I don't use the Alum trail much, at the least only occasionally, mostly due to the tourist traffic on its first half. but the photo today is essenmtially the sight I see on my way up that route; as I'm passing by the bluffs I have the good feeling that I'm entering the "upper regions" of Mt. Leconte as I glance back briefly on this scene. Nice photo.

Nice pic! Mountain Forecast is predicting highs in the 30's at that elevation Friday. Hope we get the opportunity to summit Mount Cammerer then.

I do not usually comment...I just get my daily mountain fix by reading the blog, looking at the pictures and reading the comments. However, today I am homesick for my happy place-this beautiful mountain. We just got home last night and already I yearn for another fix. I have a photo that I took on Friday from that very same rock, with that very same view of the leaves. I cannot wait to be there again...already planning our next trip!!

What a beautiful view -- it even looks better on my desk top. As someone said recently "how do I choose which of the beautiful pics to put on my desk top"--seems like I change nearly every day. That pic looks like perhaps it is looking toward chimney tops ??? Not sure, it has been many years since I was there and can't remember but whatever the high point in the pic it is so pretty and just a brief example of the beautiful views all over our ET Smokey Mtns.

Looking forward to tomorrow's pic. Love this blogs pictures and comments. Happy hiking to everyone!!!!
