Road Closure Information

Please be advised that there will be no access to Rainbow Falls, Bullhead or Trillium Gap/Grotto Falls trails as Cherokee Orchard Road will be closed from August 23 through September 17, 2010 for road improvements. Please check the websites at: www.lecontelodge.com or www.nps.gov/grsm for updates. You may also call 865-429-5704 during regular business hours for updates. Alum Cave Trail and Boulevard Trails will be open during this time period.

seems like when we were in Gatlinburg in late May that Cherokee Orchard was closed or maybe it was just the Motor Trail that was closed

So how early do you think I need to be at Alum Cave parking lot on Labor Day Monday Sept 6th to get a parking spot for our hike up to spend the night--since there are several other trails closed then?

I would plan on getting to the trailhead as early as possible to beat the day hikers.

We are traveling from south Florida for our first time over-night hike/stay at Mt.LeConte...what time is "as early as possible" and what happens if this parking lot is full due to the other trails being closed and day hikers? What time does the parking lot open?

Sharon,
The parking lot does not close. If there are no more spaces, there is plenty of room to park on the side of the road. I would suggest getting on the trail around 8 am. Most of the day hikers do not get out before until later. There are actually two lots at the Alum Cave trail head. If you get there early ( around 8) I don't think you are going to have a problem.
